Hadith 3559

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr: The Prophet never used bad language neither a "Fahish nor a Mutafahish. He used to say "The best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character." (See Hadith No. 56 (B) Vol. 8)

Hadith Commentary:
1.
Abdullah bin Amr radi Allahu anhu narrated this hadith when he came to Kufa along with Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Adab, Hadith: 6029)
According to another narration, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“The most beloved to me among you is the one whose character is best.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Fada’il Ashab al-Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Hadith: 3759)
Good character (husn al-khuluq) is to adopt virtues and abandon vices.

2.
The noble character of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was the Qur’an itself.
The meaning of these ahadith is that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was neither habitually nor artificially foul-mouthed.
Aisha radi Allahu anha states that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was not accustomed to foul speech, nor did he ever resort to it even out of pretense.
He did not raise his voice in the markets, nor did he ever repay evil with evil; rather, he would forgive and pardon.
(Fath al-Bari: 6/702)
At the time of anger, he would only say:
“What is the matter with him, may his forehead be soiled with dust.”
He would not mention anyone by name to point out a fault, but would say collectively:
“What is the matter with those people that they do such things.”
(Fath al-Bari: 6/703)
