Hadith 3540

Narrated Al-Ju'aid bin `Abdur Rahman: I saw As-Sa'ib bin Yazid when he was ninety-four years old, quite strong and of straight figure. He said, "I know that I enjoyed my hearing and seeing powers only because of the invocation of Allah's Apostle . My aunt took me to him and said, 'O Allah's Apostle! My nephew is sick; will you invoke Allah for him?' So he invoked (Allah) for me."

Hadith Commentary:

The maternal aunt of Sa’ib bin Yazid did not mention the child’s name before the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam); rather, she presented him by saying “the son of my sister.” Thus, it is established that this too is a form of indirect reference (kinayah). This is precisely the purpose of this separate chapter: that a teknonym (kunyah) is used from both the father’s and the son’s side.

Hadith Commentary:
This chapter is without a title and serves as a supplement to the previous chapter, because the words with which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was addressed were "O Muhammad," "O Abu al-Qasim," and "O Messenger of Allah." However, etiquette demands that he be referred to as "Messenger of Allah" (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Thus, the aunt of Sa'ib bin Yazid (radi Allahu anhu) addressed him as "O Messenger of Allah! Call him."

The purpose is that during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), if the intention was to draw his attention, one would say "O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)!" He was generally not called by his name or by his kunyah (patronymic).

Another point is that the aunt of Sa'ib (radi Allahu anhu) did not mention the child's name in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but rather presented him as "the son of my sister," which proves that one form of indirect reference (kinayah) is that the kunyah is used for both father and son. The apparent purpose of mentioning this topic separately is to clarify this point.

Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah left the chapter heading ambiguous so that the reader, through reflection and contemplation, may propose a title for it himself.

And Allah knows best.
