Narrated Ibn `Abbas: If you wish to know about the ignorance of the Arabs, refer to Surat-al-Anam after Verse No. 130:-- Indeed lost are those who have killed their children From folly without knowledge and have forbidden that which Allah has provided for them, inventing a lie against Allah. They have indeed gone astray and were not guided.' (6.14)

Hadith Commentary: That is, in Surah Al-An'am, all the ignorances of the Arabs are mentioned; among them, the greatest ignorance was that the wretched ones would kill their daughters with their own hands. Idolatry and highway robbery were their daily practices. They inflicted such oppression upon women that, God forbid, they considered them like animals. These calamities were removed by Allah the Exalted by sending the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

In some manuscripts, it is written as "Chapter: The Story of Zamzam and the Ignorance of the Arabs," but in this chapter, the story of Zamzam is not mentioned at all. Therefore, the correct version is the one that has been quoted here.

Apart from this, Hadith number 3523, which has already passed under (3516), is present again in the version of Shaykh Fawad, whereas in the Indian manuscripts, under this chapter, only the narration of Abu al-Nu'man is present.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
Among the Arabs, idolatry and banditry were practiced day and night, but the greatest ignorance among them was that, wretchedly, they would kill their own daughters with their own hands.

The following were the reasons for killing offspring:

Daughters were killed because they considered them a symbol of disgrace; wherever the daughter would be married, they would have to lower their gaze in shame.
The Noble Qur’an has strongly condemned this aspect.
()

Both sons and daughters were killed out of fear of livelihood, thinking that if there were too many children, the standard of living could not be maintained.
The Noble Qur’an has also clarified the filth and evil of this.
()
Even in the present so-called civilized world, this killing continues under the name of birth control.

Vows were made in the name of idols that if a certain number of sons were born, one son would be sacrificed in the name of a particular idol.
Even in this age of enlightenment, some educated people commit such foolishness.

The foolishness of these disbelievers in killing their children was that killing is a decisive torment, whereas the torment of poverty and hardship is imaginary; for the Arabs to choose a definite torment and abandon an imaginary one was ignorance and folly.

The tribes of Arabia would bury their daughters alive.
However, the tribe of Banu Kinanah did not participate in this crime.
And Allah knows best.
