Narrated Wathila bin Al-Asqa: Allah's Apostle said, "Verily, one of the worst lies is to claim falsely to be the son of someone other than one's real father, or to claim to have had a dream one has not had, or to attribute to me what I have not said."

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary: To narrate a false dream is a greater sin than lying while awake, because dreams are a part of the branches of prophethood. The one who narrates a false dream is, in effect, slandering Allah; the same applies to the one who narrates a fabricated hadith. Whoever attributes a lie to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)—if he does not repent—such a person is a living inhabitant of Hell. Nowadays, many people falsely claim to be Shaykh, Sayyid, or Pathan; they should reflect upon this Prophetic instruction and realize how grave a sin this is.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary: Telling lies is a sin even in the state of wakefulness, but since the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has declared a true dream to be the forty-sixth part of prophethood, the one who narrates a false dream, as if, seeks to cast doubt upon this part of prophethood as well—so this is a very great slander. The same is the case with the one who narrates a fabricated hadith, who attributes to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) something which he did not say. If such a person does not repent, then he is a walking denizen of Hell in this world. Apart from this, we observe that nowadays most people falsely claim to be Sayyid, Shaykh, Pathan, etc.; they too should reflect upon the aforementioned Prophetic instruction, as to how grave a crime it is to do so.
