Hadith 3500

Narrated Muhammad bin Jubair bin Mut`im: That while he was with a delegation from Quraish to Muawiya, the latter heard the news that `Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As said that there would be a king from the tribe of Qahtan. On that Muawiya became angry, got up and then praised Allah as He deserved, and said, "Now then, I have heard that some men amongst you narrate things which are neither in the Holy Book, nor have been told by Allah's Apostle. Those men are the ignorant amongst you. Beware of such hopes as make the people go astray, for I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'Authority of ruling will remain with Quraish, and whoever bears hostility to them, Allah will destroy him as long as they abide by the laws of the religion.' Hadith Commentary:
When the Quraysh abandon the religion and the Shari‘ah, it will also be taken away from them. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had said this, and it happened exactly as he foretold. For five to six hundred years, the caliphate remained with the Umayyads and the Abbasids, who were from the Quraysh. When they stopped adhering to the Shari‘ah, their caliphate was taken from them and others became kings. Since then, up to the present day, the Quraysh have not regained the caliphate or leadership.

The hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr is not contrary to this. The meaning of that hadith is that near the Day of Judgment, there will be a king from among the Arab tribe of Qahtan. This is also narrated from Abu Hurayrah. It is also narrated in a marfu‘ (attributed to the Prophet) form from Dhi Mukhbir al-Habashi that before the Quraysh, rule was with the Himyar, and then it will return to them. Ahmad and Tabarani have recorded this.

Qahtan is a well-known tribe in Yemen. Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu was not aware of the hadith of Muhammad ibn Jubayr, which is why he was doubtful and took notice of it in such harsh words. However, his objection was not correct, because this hadith is authentic and established from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam with a sound chain, as Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu has also narrated it.

Hadith Commentary:

In this hadith, the virtue of the Quraysh is mentioned: as long as they remain steadfast upon the religion of Islam, governance and leadership will remain among them. Accordingly, for five to six hundred years, the caliphate of the Umayyads and the Abbasids continued, and all these individuals were Qurayshi. When they abandoned adherence to the Shariah, the caliphate was taken away from them and others became kings; after that, the Quraysh did not regain governance.

The meaning of the hadith of Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu is that near the Day of Judgment, there will be a king from the Arab tribe of Qahtan who will rule over people by force.
A similar narration is also reported from Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu.
Qahtan is a well-known tribe in Yemen.
Amir Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu thought that people wanted to use this hadith as a basis to seize the caliphate from the Quraysh, and on this basis, he took strict notice and became displeased.
He understood that in the near future, governance would be taken away from the Quraysh, whereas Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu intended that this would happen near the Day of Judgment, and it would be a major sign of the changing of times and the alteration of rulings.
That Qahtani will not be Qurayshi, nor will he have any connection to the family of Prophethood.

Hadith Commentary:
Apart from the narration mentioned regarding Qahtani, this hadith has also been narrated by Abu Hurairah and Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhum).
However, it seems that Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) thought that perhaps this occurred in the early period of Islam—this is incorrect. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has specified leadership (imarah) for the Quraysh, and the meaning of the hadith is that near the Day of Judgment, a time will come when a man from Qahtan will be king.
The matter of Islamic caliphate (khilafah) is exclusive to the Quraysh,
as long as they uphold the religion.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The heading established by Imam Bukhari rahimahullah is itself an independent hadith, as narrated from Anas radi Allahu anhu, who said:
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
"The caliphs will be from the Quraysh.
There are rights upon you towards them, and rights upon them towards you.
This will be as long as they listen to the call of kinship, uphold their agreements, and maintain justice and fairness in their judgments. If they do not do so, then upon them is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people."
(Musnad Ahmad 3/129)
Similarly, this narration has also been reported by Abu Barzah al-Aslami radi Allahu anhu.
(Musnad Ahmad 4/424)
The same wording is also narrated from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari radi Allahu anhu.
(Musnad Ahmad 4/396)
Imam Tirmidhi rahimahullah has established a chapter in this regard with the following words:
(Bab ma ja'a anna al-khulafa min Quraysh ila an taqum al-sa'ah)
"The caliphs will be from the Quraysh until the Hour is established."
Then, to establish this heading, he presented the following hadith:
A man from the tribe of Bakr bin Wa'il said:
"If the Quraysh do not desist from their actions, Allah the Exalted will take the caliphate from them and entrust it to the majority of the Arabs."
Upon hearing this, Amr bin al-As radi Allahu anhu said, "You are mistaken, for the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
'In good and bad circumstances, the Quraysh will remain the leaders of the people until the Hour is established.'"
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi, Al-Fitan, Hadith 2227)

2.
Amir Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu was displeased because, in his view, the emergence of the Qahtani was imminent, whereas from the hadith of Abdullah bin Amr radi Allahu anhu, this is not apparent. Rather, from the hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu, it is understood that the emergence of the Qahtani will occur near the time of the Hour.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Al-Fitan, Hadith 7117)
This will happen when the Quraysh no longer maintain the standard in the matter of the caliphate about which the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam spoke, meaning they will not observe the rights of the subjects and, instead of justice and fairness, will begin to commit oppression and injustice.
And Allah knows best.
