Hadith 3488

Narrated Sa`id bin Al-Musaiyab: When Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan came to Medina for the last time, he delivered a sermon before us. He took out a tuft of hair and said, "I never thought that someone other than the Jews would do such a thing (i.e. use false hair). The Prophet named such a practice, 'Az-Zur' (i.e. falsehood)," meaning the use of false hair.

Hadith Commentary:
It is prohibited for a woman to adorn herself with such artificial hair.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has concluded the Book of the Prophets (Kitab al-Anbiya) here, in which the total number of hadiths—including marfu‘ (directly attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), repeated narrations, and suspended narrations (ta‘liq), etc.—is two hundred.
People of knowledge should refer to Fath al-Bari for further details.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
By "deceit" is meant lying and trickery, that is, displaying and adorning the hair in a false manner. The meaning is that to attain artificial beauty by mixing someone else's hair with one's own is, in fact, one of the many social diseases that had become prevalent among the women of the Jews. Among these was the common use of artificial hair. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) strictly forbade this. He cursed the woman who adds artificial hair to her own and also declared cursed the woman for whom this is done.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Dress, Hadith: (5934))
In modern times, this is called a wig and is commonly available in markets. It comes in various styles. Previously, it was used only to conceal baldness, but now, as society has "progressed," it has begun to be used as an adornment. There is no room in Islam for such deception and falsehood. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
The destruction and ruin of the Children of Israel occurred due to such actions.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Dress, Hadith: (5932))
The short-statured women among the Children of Israel would also use artificial wooden legs to make themselves appear taller. In our society, high-heeled shoes are used. Islam is the religion of nature (fitrah) and does not permit false adornment. We should avoid all such actions that involve trickery or deceit, because in the view of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), all such actions are accursed.
2.
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has collected under this chapter those ahadith which, in one way or another, are related to the Children of Israel. In these ahadith, the character of the Jews and Christians is presented. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has commanded opposition to them. The purpose is that we Muslims should avoid those actions that are the hallmarks of the Jews and Christians. May Allah, the Exalted, keep us steadfast on the religion of Islam and grant us a good end upon it.
Ameen.
