Narrated Rabi` bin Hirash: `Uqba said to Hudhaifa, "Won't you narrate to us what you heard from Allah's Apostle ?" Hudhaifa said, "I heard him saying, 'Death approached a man and when he had no hope of surviving, he said to his family, 'When I die, gather for me much wood and build a fire (to burn me),. When the fire has eaten my flesh and reached my bones, take the bones and grind them and scatter the resulting powder in the sea on a hot (or windy) day.' (That was done.) But Allah collected his particles and asked (him), 'Why did you do so?' He replied, 'For fear of You.' So Allah forgave him." Narrated `Abdu Malik: As above, saying, "On a windy day."

Hadith Commentary:
In some narrations, he has been described as a grave-cloth thief.
In any case, in his false notion, he thought of this way to escape the punishments of the Hereafter, but Allah is capable of everything.
He gathered together the particles of that ash and made him stand for reckoning.
Such false superstitions are entirely against human nature.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
In this hadith, the reference to 'Uqbah is to Abu Mas'ud 'Uqbah bin 'Amr al-Badri radi Allahu anhu, whereas in the previous hadith 3478, it was 'Uqbah bin 'Abd al-Ghafir. These are two different individuals. The explanation of this hadith has already been given. See hadith 3452. There, it was clarified regarding that man that he was a shroud thief. In any case, this person, according to his own thinking, devised a self-invented method to escape the punishment of the Hereafter, but Allah ta'ala is capable of all things; He gathered every single particle of ash and made that person stand before Him for reckoning.
➋
From this hadith, it is understood that such false beliefs are entirely contrary to human nature.
