Hadith 3463

Narrated Jundub: Allah's Apostle said, "Amongst the nations before you there was a man who got a wound, and growing impatient (with its pain), he took a knife and cut his hand with it and the blood did not stop till he died. Allah said, 'My Slave hurried to bring death upon himself so I have forbidden him (to enter) Paradise.' "

Hadith Commentary:
The mention of a person from previous times has been narrated in the hadith; this is the relevance to the chapter. The hadith indicates that Paradise is forbidden for the one who commits suicide. In all these narrations, the mention of the People of the Book (Ahl al-Kitab) has been indicated in one way or another, which is why they have been included here.

Hadith Commentary:

In this hadith, the words (من قبلكم) "those before you" are mentioned, which also includes Bani Isra'il (the Children of Israel).

In this hadith, it is stated that Paradise is forbidden for the one who commits suicide. This ruling is based on rebuke and admonition. It is also possible that the person considered suicide to be permissible; doing so is disbelief (kufr), and Paradise is forbidden for a disbeliever. Or, it may be that a specific Paradise has been forbidden for him, meaning he will not enter Jannat al-Firdaws. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has mentioned seven such instances. In any case, committing suicide is a very grave crime; through this act, a person can be deprived of Paradise. (Fath al-Bari: 6/611)

From this hadith, it is understood that narrating the incidents of previous nations is permissible, provided that there is an aspect of admonition and advice in them. Otherwise, listening to and narrating stories merely for entertainment is not permissible. And Allah knows best.

In all these ahadith, there is mention of the People of the Book in one way or another; therefore, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has taken care to narrate these ahadith.
