Hudhaifa further said, "I also heard him saying, 'Once there was a man on his death-bed, who, losing every hope of surviving said to his family: When I die, gather for me a large heap of wood and make a fire (to burn me). When the fire eats my meat and reaches my bones, and when the bones burn, take and crush them into powder and wait for a windy day to throw it (i.e. the powder) over the sea. They did so, but Allah collected his particles and asked him: Why did you do so? He replied: For fear of You. So Allah forgave him." `Uqba bin `Amr said, "I heard him saying that the Israeli used to dig the grave of the dead (to steal their shrouds).

Hadith Commentary:
The person mentioned was from the Children of Israel; this is the reason for its relevance to the chapter.
Cremating the dead is a result of such erroneous notions which are contrary to nature.
The origin of man is from earth.
Therefore, burying him in the earth after death is a requirement of nature.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
This incident also pertains to the Children of Israel, because in one narration it is clarified that Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu and Abu Mas’ud radi Allahu anhu were both sitting, so one said to the other:
I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say:
“A man from the Children of Israel used to steal shrouds from the graveyard.”
(al-Mu’jam al-Awsat of al-Tabarani: 80/4)
From this, it is also understood that the explicit mention of the shroud thief is not only an addition from Abu Mas’ud ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amr, but Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu also narrates it, as is found in Ibn Hibban.
Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu narrates that a man died who was a shroud thief, so he made a bequest to his sons.
(Sahih Ibn Hibban, as arranged by Ibn Balban: 387/3)
2.
Cremating the dead is against human nature.
And it is likewise the result of erroneous beliefs as mentioned in the hadith.
The origin of man is earth, therefore after death, burying him in the earth is what nature demands.
