Narrated `Umar: I heard the Prophet saying, "Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians praised the son of Mary, for I am only a Slave. So, call me the Slave of Allah and His Apostle."

Hadith Commentary:
The servant of Allah, the beloved of Allah, the intimate friend (khalil) of Allah, the noblest of the Prophets—this is the extent of your praise.
When, in the Qur’an, you were called the servant of Allah and this verse was revealed: ﴿lammā qāma ‘abdu-llāhi﴾ (al-Jinn: 19),
you were extremely pleased, for pure servitude (‘ubudiyyah) to Allah is a very great rank.
What do the ignorant know of this?
They have understood the praise (na‘t) of the Prophet ﷺ to mean that they should make you into a god, or even raise you a degree above God.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has guided us not to engage in exaggeration when praising him, as the Christians did with ‘Isa (alayhis salam), elevating him to the rank of divinity and declaring him to be the son of Allah.
This was an extreme exaggeration in their praise, which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade.
➋
In Surah al-Jinn, Allah the Exalted referred to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) as “the servant of Allah.” The Exalted said:
“When the servant of Allah stood up to invoke Him, they almost crowded upon him.” ( )
But unfortunately, today the so-called Muslims have exaggerated and gone to extremes in praising the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to such an extent that they have elevated him to the rank of divinity. Thus, a group among the Muslims has declared the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to be “light from the Light of Allah,” and some people have composed extremely exaggerated and excessive poems in his praise, for example:
“He who was established upon the Throne descended to Madinah as Mustafa, having become God.”
The Jews and Christians held the belief of indwelling (hulul) regarding ‘Isa (alayhis salam), but among us, some Muslims have adopted the belief of Allah’s indwelling not only in the Prophets (alayhimus salam) but also in other saints. Thus, consider another such poem:
“Allah Himself took the name Khwaja Gharib Nawaz in India.”
Some people have held the belief regarding ‘Ali (radi Allahu anhu) that he is the manifestation of Allah’s Essence and that Allah indwelt in his body.
Husayn ibn Mansur al-Hallaj was the first person who openly claimed regarding himself that Allah the Exalted had indwelt in his being, and he raised the slogan “Ana al-Haqq” (“I am the Truth”).
Despite being admonished, when he persisted in his belief, the Caliph of Baghdad, al-Muqtadir Billah, had him executed in Baghdad, his corpse burned, and his ashes thrown into the river.
But unfortunately, the belief of indwelling (hulul) continues to be inherited among Muslims even today.

Benefit:
In this hadith, exaggeration (ghuluww) regarding the personalities of the Prophets (alayhim as-salam) has been prohibited. Allah Ta’ala has set certain principles even for love and reverence, and it is in the light of these principles that love for every distinguished personality should be maintained. Among the previous nations who went astray were also the Christians, who exaggerated concerning Sayyiduna ‘Isa (alayhis-salam) to the extent that they elevated him to the status of God, and even called his mother Maryam a god. Whereas this was their clear misguidance. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) strictly forbade such exaggeration, saying: do not exaggerate about me as they did. I am a servant of Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
Some misguided sects call the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) «نور من نور الله», the meaning of which is clear: that the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is also separate from the Essence of Allah Ta’ala, because the Essence of Allah Ta’ala is light (nur), and they began to call our Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) “light” (nur) as well, which is manifest ignorance. And some have considered him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to be the absolute disposer (mukhtar kull) and remover of difficulties (mushkil kasha), whereas these attributes are exclusive to Allah Ta’ala alone.
If one looks at the reality and with fairness, these people are persistent in opposing the Qur’an and Sunnah, and are false claimants of love for the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Love for him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) should be in the light of divine revelation.
