Hadith 3395

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet said, "One should not say that I am better than Jonah (i.e. Yunus) bin Matta." So, he mentioned his father Matta.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) regarding Yunus (alayhis salam) is based on humility and modesty. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) clarified this because Allah the Exalted says:
“Be patient for the command of your Lord, and do not be like the companion of the fish.” (: al-Qalam 68:48)
This was so that, due to the revelation of this verse, no suspicion of any kind of disgrace or weakness regarding Yunus (alayhis salam) would arise.
2.
The intent of Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) is clear: the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) conveyed the speech of Allah the Exalted, thus establishing a distinction between the statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and the speech of Allah the Exalted, just as there is a difference between recitation (tilawah) and what is recited (matluw).
The statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is created, while the speech of Allah the Exalted is uncreated, and the narration is the action of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), which is created by Allah the Exalted.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
One meaning of this hadith is that no individual of the Ummah should ever consider himself superior to any prophet; for him, this is absolutely impermissible. Another meaning that is stated is that it is not appropriate for any servant to say that I, i.e., the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), am better than Yunus ibn Matta. However, there is an objection to this, as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is indeed the most virtuous of the prophets, and he himself has said, "I am the leader of the children of Adam, and I do not say this out of pride." The hadith scholars (muhaddithin) have given the following answers to this objection:
➊ The statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was before the knowledge of superiority (afdhaliyyah) was made known.
➋ He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) made this statement as an act of humility and modesty.
➌ In this manner, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) warned the Ummah that, being affected by the incident of the fish, no one should show disrespect towards any prophet.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary: The Qur'an has referred to Prophet Yunus (alayhis salam) as "Dhul-Nun," meaning "the one of the fish," who, after entering the belly of the fish, recited the noble verse (ayah karimah): ﴿لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ﴾. By the blessing of this, Allah Ta'ala brought him out alive from the belly of the fish. Even now, reciting this noble verse (ayah karimah) has the same effect.

Hadith Commentary:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said this so that, upon hearing the story of Yunus (alayhis salam), no one would belittle or disparage him, and this statement of his is out of humility and modesty. Otherwise, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is superior to all the Prophets (alayhimus salam).
Some historians have mentioned that Mataa was the name of Yunus’s (alayhis salam) mother.
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) refuted this, stating that Mataa was the name of his father, not his mother.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: It is established from this hadith that Matta was the name of the father of Yunus (alayhis salam); the name of his mother is not mentioned. However, Wahb ibn Munabbih, Imam Tabari, and Ibn Athir consider this to be the name of his mother. (Takmila, vol. 5, p. 35).

Benefits and Issues:
It cannot be understood from these words that it is permissible to say this about anyone other than the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and if the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself is also included in this, as is found in the following narration, then this expresses his utmost humility.
