Hadith 3365

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : " لَمَّا كَانَ بَيْنَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَيْنَ أَهْلِهِ مَا كَانَ خَرَجَ بِإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَأُمِّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَمَعَهُمْ شَنَّةٌ فِيهَا مَاءٌ فَجَعَلَتْ أُمُّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ تَشْرَبُ مِنَ الشَّنَّةِ فَيَدِرُّ لَبَنُهَا عَلَى صَبِيِّهَا حَتَّى قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ فَوَضَعَهَا تَحْتَ دَوْحَةٍ ، ثُمَّ رَجَعَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ فَاتَّبَعَتْهُ أُمُّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ حَتَّى لَمَّا بَلَغُوا كَدَاءً نَادَتْهُ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ إِلَى مَنْ تَتْرُكُنَا ، قَالَ : إِلَى اللَّهِ ، قَالَتْ : رَضِيتُ بِاللَّهِ ، قَالَ : فَرَجَعَتْ فَجَعَلَتْ تَشْرَبُ مِنَ الشَّنَّةِ وَيَدِرُّ لَبَنُهَا عَلَى صَبِيِّهَا حَتَّى لَمَّا فَنِيَ الْمَاءُ ، قَالَتْ : لَوْ ذَهَبْتُ فَنَظَرْتُ لَعَلِّي أُحِسُّ أَحَدًا ، قَالَ : فَذَهَبَتْ فَصَعِدَتْ الصَّفَا فَنَظَرَتْ وَنَظَرَتْ هَلْ تُحِسُّ أَحَدًا فَلَمْ تُحِسَّ أَحَدًا فَلَمَّا بَلَغَتِ الْوَادِيَ سَعَتْ وَأَتَتْ الْمَرْوَةَ فَفَعَلَتْ ذَلِكَ أَشْوَاطًا ، ثُمَّ قَالَتْ : لَوْ ذَهَبْتُ فَنَظَرْتُ مَا فَعَلَ تَعْنِي الصَّبِيَّ فَذَهَبَتْ فَنَظَرَتْ فَإِذَا هُوَ عَلَى حَالِهِ كَأَنَّهُ يَنْشَغُ لِلْمَوْتِ فَلَمْ تُقِرَّهَا نَفْسُهَا ، فَقَالَتْ : لَوْ ذَهَبْتُ فَنَظَرْتُ لَعَلِّي أُحِسُّ أَحَدًا فَذَهَبَتْ فَصَعِدَتْ الصَّفَا فَنَظَرَتْ وَنَظَرَتْ فَلَمْ تُحِسَّ أَحَدًا حَتَّى أَتَمَّتْ سَبْعًا ، ثُمَّ قَالَتْ : لَوْ ذَهَبْتُ فَنَظَرْتُ مَا فَعَلَ فَإِذَا هِيَ بِصَوْتٍ ، فَقَالَتْ : أَغِثْ إِنْ كَانَ عِنْدَكَ خَيْرٌ فَإِذَا جِبْرِيلُ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ : بِعَقِبِهِ هَكَذَا وَغَمَزَ عَقِبَهُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ ، قَالَ : فَانْبَثَقَ الْمَاءُ فَدَهَشَتْ أُمُّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ فَجَعَلَتْ تَحْفِزُ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لَوْ تَرَكَتْهُ كَانَ الْمَاءُ ظَاهِرًا ، قَالَ : فَجَعَلَتْ تَشْرَبُ مِنَ الْمَاءِ وَيَدِرُّ لَبَنُهَا عَلَى صَبِيِّهَا ، قَالَ : فَمَرَّ نَاسٌ مِنْ جُرْهُمَ بِبَطْنِ الْوَادِي فَإِذَا هُمْ بِطَيْرٍ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَنْكَرُوا ذَاكَ ، وَقَالُوا : مَا يَكُونُ الطَّيْرُ إِلَّا عَلَى مَاءٍ فَبَعَثُوا رَسُولَهُمْ فَنَظَرَ فَإِذَا هُمْ بِالْمَاءِ فَأَتَاهُمْ فَأَخْبَرَهُمْ فَأَتَوْا إِلَيْهَا ، فَقَالُوا : يَا أُمَّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ أَتَأْذَنِينَ لَنَا أَنْ نَكُونَ مَعَكِ أَوْ نَسْكُنَ مَعَكِ فَبَلَغَ ابْنُهَا فَنَكَحَ فِيهِمُ امْرَأَةً ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ بَدَا لِإِبْرَاهِيمَ ، فَقَالَ : لِأَهْلِهِ إِنِّي مُطَّلِعٌ تَرِكَتِي ، قَالَ : فَجَاءَ فَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : أَيْنَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ ؟ ، فَقَالَتْ : امْرَأَتُهُ ذَهَبَ يَصِيدُ ، قَالَ : قُولِي لَهُ إِذَا جَاءَ غَيِّرْ عَتَبَةَ بَابِكَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ ، قَالَ : أَنْتِ ذَاكِ فَاذْهَبِي إِلَى أَهْلِكِ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ بَدَا لِإِبْرَاهِيمَ ، فَقَالَ : لِأَهْلِهِ إِنِّي مُطَّلِعٌ تَرِكَتِي ، قَالَ : فَجَاءَ فَقَالَ : أَيْنَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ ؟ ، فَقَالَتْ : امْرَأَتُهُ ذَهَبَ يَصِيدُ ، فَقَالَتْ : أَلَا تَنْزِلُ فَتَطْعَمَ وَتَشْرَبَ ، فَقَالَ : وَمَا طَعَامُكُمْ وَمَا شَرَابُكُمْ ؟ ، قَالَتْ : وَشَرَابُنَا الْمَاءُ : طَعَامُنَا اللَّحْمُ قَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِي طَعَامِهِمْ وَشَرَابِهِمْ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : بَرَكَةٌ بِدَعْوَةِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمَا وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ بَدَا لِإِبْرَاهِيمَ ، فَقَالَ : لِأَهْلِهِ إِنِّي مُطَّلِعٌ تَرِكَتِي فَجَاءَ فَوَافَقَ إِسْمَاعِيلَ مِنْ وَرَاءِ زَمْزَمَ يُصْلِحُ نَبْلًا لَهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَبْنِيَ لَهُ بَيْتًا ، قَالَ : أَطِعْ رَبَّكَ ، قَالَ إِنَّهُ قَدْ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ تُعِينَنِي عَلَيْهِ ، قَالَ : إِذَنْ أَفْعَلَ ، أَوْ كَمَا قَالَ : قَالَ : فَقَامَا فَجَعَلَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَبْنِي وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ يُنَاوِلُهُ الْحِجَارَةَ وَيَقُولَانِ رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ سورة البقرة آية 127 ، قَالَ : حَتَّى ارْتَفَعَ الْبِنَاءُ وَضَعُفَ الشَّيْخُ عَلَى نَقْلِ الْحِجَارَةِ فَقَامَ عَلَى حَجَرِ الْمَقَامِ فَجَعَلَ يُنَاوِلُهُ الْحِجَارَةَ وَيَقُولَانِ رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ سورة البقرة آية 127 " .
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: When Abraham had differences with his wife), (because of her jealousy of Hajar, Ishmael's mother), he took Ishmael and his mother and went away. They had a water-skin with them containing some water, Ishmael's mother used to drink water from the water-skin so that her milk would increase for her child. When Abraham reached Mecca, he made her sit under a tree and afterwards returned home. Ishmael's mother followed him, and when they reached Kada', she called him from behind, 'O Abraham! To whom are you leaving us?' He replied, '(I am leaving you) to Allah's (Care).' She said, 'I am satisfied to be with Allah.' She returned to her place and started drinking water from the water-skin, and her milk increased for her child. When the water had all been used up, she said to herself, 'I'd better go and look so that I may see somebody.' She ascended the Safa mountain and looked, hoping to see somebody, but in vain. When she came down to the valley, she ran till she reached the Marwa mountain. She ran to and fro (between the two mountains) many times. They she said to herself, 'i'd better go and see the state of the child,' she went and found it in a state of one on the point of dying. She could not endure to watch it dying and said (to herself), 'If I go and look, I may find somebody.' She went and ascended the Safa mountain and looked for a long while but could not find anybody. Thus she completed seven rounds (of running) between Safa and Marwa. Again she said (to herself), 'I'd better go back and see the state of the child.' But suddenly she heard a voice, and she said to that strange voice, 'Help us if you can offer any help.' Lo! It was Gabriel (who had made the voice). Gabriel hit the earth with his heel like this (Ibn `Abbas hit the earth with his heel to Illustrate it), and so the water gushed out. Ishmael's mother was astonished and started digging. (Abu Al-Qasim) (i.e. the Prophet) said, "If she had left the water, (flow naturally without her intervention), it would have been flowing on the surface of the earth.") Ishmael's mother started drinking from the water and her milk increased for her child . Afterwards some people of the tribe of Jurhum, while passing through the bottom of the valley, saw some birds, and that astonished them, and they said, 'Birds can only be found at a place where there is water.' They sent a messenger who searched the place and found the water, and returned to inform them about it. Then they all went to her and said, 'O ishmael's mother! Will you allow us to be with you (or dwell with you)?' (And thus they stayed there.) Later on her boy reached the age of puberty and married a lady from them. Then an idea occurred to Abraham which he disclosed to his wife (Sarah), 'I want to call on my dependents I left (at Mecca).' When he went there, he greeted (Ishmael's wife) and said, 'Where is Ishmael?' She replied, 'He has gone out hunting.' Abraham said (to her), 'When he comes, tell him to change the threshold of his gate.' When he came, she told him the same whereupon Ishmael said to her, 'You are the threshold, so go to your family (i.e. you are divorced).' Again Abraham thought of visiting his dependents whom he had left (at Mecca), and he told his wife (Sarah) of his intentions. Abraham came to Ishmael's house and asked. "Where is Ishmael?" Ishmael's wife replied, "He has gone out hunting," and added, "Will you stay (for some time) and have something to eat and drink?' Abraham asked, 'What is your food and what is your drink?' She replied, 'Our food is meat and our drink is water.' He said, 'O Allah! Bless their meals and their drink." Abu Al-Qa-sim (i.e. Prophet) said, "Because of Abraham's invocation there are blessings (in Mecca)." Once more Abraham thought of visiting his family he had left (at Mecca), so he told his wife (Sarah) of his decision. He went and found Ishmael behind the Zamzam well, mending his arrows. He said, "O Ishmael, Your Lord has ordered me to build a house for Him." Ishmael said, "Obey (the order of) your Lord." Abraham said, "Allah has also ordered me that you should help me therein." Ishmael said, "Then I will do." So, both of them rose and Abraham started building (the Ka`ba) while Ishmael went on handing him the stones, and both of them were saying, "O our Lord ! Accept (this service) from us, Verily, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." (2.127). When the building became high and the old man (i.e. Abraham) could no longer lift the stones (to such a high position), he stood over the stone of Al- Maqam and Ishmael carried on handing him the stones, and both of them were saying, 'O our Lord! Accept (this service) from us, Verily You are All-Hearing, All-Knowing." (2.127)

Hadith Commentary:
Many matters are mentioned in this lengthy hadith.
At the beginning, there is mention of Lady Hajar (radi Allahu anha) tying a waist-belt.
With this, a woman can move about quickly and perform tasks with ease.
Some have translated it thus: so that with this waist-belt, she could erase her footprints left on the path, so that Lady Sarah (radi Allahu anha) would not be able to trace her.
What happened was that Lady Sarah (radi Allahu anha) had no children (she had later),
and Lady Hajar (radi Allahu anha), who was a princess of Egypt and whom the king, having witnessed the blessings of this family, had included in the household of Ibrahim (alayhis salam),
thus Lady Hajar became pregnant and Isma'il (alayhis salam) came into existence.
Lady Sarah’s (radi Allahu anha) jealousy increased greatly, so out of fear, Lady Hajar (radi Allahu anha) left the house and took Isma'il (alayhis salam) with her, and tied a belt around her waist so that she could erase her footprints as she walked.
In this way, Lady Sarah would not be able to find her.
Thus, Ibrahim (alayhis salam) settled them in the barren land of Makkah, where Allah, the Exalted, had His House rebuilt by their hands.
Jurhum, which is mentioned in the narration, is a tribe from Yemen.
This very tribe, after seeking permission from Lady Hajar (radi Allahu anha), settled here, and when Isma'il (alayhis salam) grew up, he married into this family.
Ibrahim (alayhis salam) did not approve of the first marriage and, by way of indication, instructed for divorce.
Upon finding the second wife to be patient and grateful, he expressed happiness with her.
Indeed, in these events, there are many lessons of guidance hidden for people of insight, for which the eye of discernment is required to understand.
May Allah, the Exalted, grant every brother who studies Sahih al-Bukhari the eye of insight.

Hadith Commentary:
When Ibrahim (alayhis salam) and Isma'il (alayhis salam) were raising the foundations of the House of Allah (the Ka'bah), they made the aforementioned supplication along with additional prayers, which the Noble Qur'an has mentioned.

They supplicated to Allah in these words:
“Our Lord! Make us both submissive to You, and from our descendants a community submissive to You. Show us our rites of worship, and turn to us in mercy. Indeed, You are the Most-Relenting, Most Merciful. Our Lord! Raise up among them a Messenger from among themselves who will recite to them Your verses, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. Indeed, You are the Mighty, the Wise.” (al-Baqarah: 128/2, 129)

Allah, the Exalted, honored each and every one of their supplications with acceptance, so they were wholly characterized by submission and contentment.

When Allah, the Exalted, said to them:
“Ibrahim! Submit yourself,” he immediately replied:
“I submit myself to the Lord of the worlds.” (al-Baqarah: 131/2)

A prominent manifestation of this submission is seen when Allah, the Exalted, indicated to Ibrahim (alayhis salam) in a dream: “Sacrifice your son for My sake,” and he immediately prepared to comply with the command.

Their obedience is described in the Qur'an:
“When the son (Isma'il, alayhis salam) reached the age to walk with him, Ibrahim (alayhis salam) said: ‘My dear son! I have seen in a dream that I am sacrificing you, so tell me what you think.’ The son replied: ‘O my father! Do as you are commanded. If Allah wills, you will find me among the patient.’ Then, when both had submitted and he laid him down on his forehead, We called out: ‘O Ibrahim! You have fulfilled the vision.’ Indeed, thus do We reward the doers of good. Surely, this was a clear trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice, and left for him a good mention among later generations. Peace be upon Ibrahim.” (37:102, 109)

Thus, the example of obedience established by Ibrahim (alayhis salam) and Isma'il (alayhis salam) was so beloved to Allah, the Exalted, that He made sacrifice (qurbani) a perpetual Sunnah.

Until the Day of Judgment, people will continue to revive this Sunnah by offering sacrifice.

Hadith Commentary:

This hadith begins with the mention of tying a waistband.
The cloth with which servants tie their waists while serving is called "mintaq" in the Arabic language.
Women tie a waistband at home so that they can move quickly and perform household chores with ease.


Why did Sayyidah Hajarah radi Allahu anha tie a waistband? The commentators have mentioned two purposes for this, the details of which are as follows:
a.
By tying this waistband, the intention was to please Sayyidah Sarah, thus she made herself appear in the state of a servant so that it would be apparent to Sayyidah Sarah that she was her attendant, not a co-wife.
b.
Sayyidah Sarah had no children, and Sayyidah Hajarah radi Allahu anha, who was the daughter of the king of Egypt and whom that king, after witnessing the blessings of this family, had included in the household of Ibrahim alayhis salam.
After entering the household, she became pregnant, and from her womb, Sayyiduna Isma'il was born, which greatly increased Sayyidah Sarah's suspicion.
By Allah's command, Sayyidah Hajarah radi Allahu anha left her home with her beloved son along with Ibrahim alayhis salam and tied a waistband so that her footprints would be erased as she walked.
In this way, Sayyidah Sarah could not trace her.
And Ibrahim alayhis salam settled them in the barren land of Makkah, where Allah Ta'ala had His House rebuilt by the hands of father and son.


Some people have argued from this hadith that the Dhabihullah (the one to be sacrificed) was Sayyiduna Ishaq alayhis salam, because according to this hadith, Ibrahim alayhis salam left his son Isma'il alayhis salam in a state of infancy, and when he came to visit, he was married. If the mention of sacrificing Isma'il alayhis salam was intended, then it would have certainly been mentioned in this hadith that Ibrahim alayhis salam used to come before his son's marriage as well. However, in our view, this argument is questionable because this hadith does not state at all that from the time of nursing until the time of marriage, Ibrahim alayhis salam did not visit his son; rather, it is established that he came repeatedly, as is mentioned in the narration of Abu Juham that Ibrahim alayhis salam would come to Makkah every month in the morning riding on Buraq, then return and take his midday rest in his homeland of Sham. Furthermore, when Allah Ta'ala gave the glad tidings of the birth of Isma'il alayhis salam, the attribute "Halim" (forbearing) was mentioned with it, and this is related to the sacrifice, because at that occasion there is a subtle indication towards his forbearance. But when the glad tidings of Sayyiduna Ishaq alayhis salam were given, the attribute "Alim" (knowledgeable) was mentioned, which has no relation to the sacrifice.
In addition, in Surah as-Saffat, first the son of Ibrahim alayhis salam is mentioned who was in fact Dhabihullah.
After that, Sayyiduna Ishaq alayhis salam is mentioned.
This mention comes after the incident of the sacrifice.
From this as well, it is clear that Dhabihullah was not Sayyiduna Ishaq alayhis salam, but rather Sayyiduna Isma'il alayhis salam. Furthermore, at the time of the glad tidings of Ishaq alayhis salam, the glad tidings of his son Ya'qub alayhis salam were also given, meaning he would reach adulthood and have offspring, so what would be the point of commanding his sacrifice? Therefore, the Dhabih was indeed Sayyiduna Isma'il alayhis salam.
