Hadith Commentary:
Prophet Ibrahim (alayhis salam) gave that skin bag filled with water to Hajarah (alayhas salam), and leaving her and her suckling child in that desolate, barren wilderness, departed, relying solely on Allah. When the water was finished and the child began to suffer from thirst, Hajarah (alayhas salam) became anxious and set out in search of water. She made seven circuits between the hills of Safa and Marwah, but found no sign of water. Finally, Jibril (alayhis salam) descended and struck the ground with his wing, from which the spring of Zamzam gushed forth. Hajarah (alayhas salam) built a barrier around this spring to contain its water. It took the form of a basin. To this day, this spring remains, which is called Zamzam, and its water is blessed. It is mentioned in the hadith that the water of Zamzam, whatever purpose it is drunk for, Allah the Exalted fulfills it.

In this hadith, the following words are mentioned regarding Zamzam: “If Hajarah (alayhas salam) had not built a barrier around it, it would have been a flowing spring (lakan ‘aynan ma‘inan).” Some translators have added in their translation that it would have been a flowing spring (on the face of the earth). If by “on the face of the earth” they mean the entire earth, i.e., the inhabited quarter, then this is their own addition. In the hadith, it is only stated that it would have been a flowing spring. Such additions in translation have given deniers of hadith the opportunity to mislead the public with their falsehoods against hadith. May Allah protect us from them. Ameen.
