Hadith 3357

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ تَلِيدٍ الرُّعَيْنِيُّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَمْ يَكْذِبْ إِبْرَاهِيمُ إِلَّا ثَلَاثًا " .
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "Abraham did not tell a lie except on three occasions."

Hadith Commentary:
The meaning of tawriyah is that the actual event is something else, but a person, due to a particular expediency, describes it using words with two meanings in such a manner that the listener does not understand the real event; rather, his mind is diverted towards something contrary to the actual occurrence.
The Shari‘ah has permitted this in certain specific circumstances.
