Hadith 3350

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "On the Day of Resurrection Abraham will meet his father Azar whose face will be dark and covered with dust.(The Prophet Abraham will say to him): 'Didn't I tell you not to disobey me?' His father will reply: 'Today I will not disobey you.' 'Abraham will say: 'O Lord! You promised me not to disgrace me on the Day of Resurrection; and what will be more disgraceful to me than cursing and dishonoring my father?' Then Allah will say (to him):' 'I have forbidden Paradise for the disbelievers." Then he will be addressed, 'O Abraham! Look! What is underneath your feet?' He will look and there he will see a Dhabh (an animal,) blood-stained, which will be caught by the legs and thrown in the (Hell) Fire."

Hadith Commentary:
From this hadith, those so-called Muslims should take heed who fabricate false stories and miracles about the friends of Allah (awliya Allah) and thereby bring them into disrepute.
For example, the claim that the great Pir Jilani snatched the pouch of souls from Hazrat Azra’il (alayhis salam), in which were the souls of both believers and disbelievers, and that he admitted them all into Paradise.
Many such tales have been fabricated by polytheists about many elders.
When even a prophet like Hazrat Khalil Allah (Abraham, alayhis salam) will not be able to help his own father on the Day of Judgment, then how could anyone else have the audacity to intercede for a disciple or student without the permission of Allah?

Hadith Commentary:

The father of Ibrahim (alayhis salam), Azar, will be transformed into the form of a badger because among all animals, it is the most foolish. It even neglects those necessary things which should not be neglected. When your father did not accept your advice and remained ensnared by the deception of Shaytan, and furthermore remained heedless of a necessary matter, then on the Day of Resurrection he will be turned into a badger.

From this hadith, it is understood that if a person dies upon disbelief (kufr), then the elevated status of his son will not benefit him in any way, nor can the elevated status of the father benefit the son, as is evident from the incident of Nuh (alayhis salam) and his son.

This hadith should serve as a lesson for those so-called Muslims who, by fabricating false miracles (karamat) about the noble friends of Allah (awliya karim rahimahumullah), become a cause of their defamation.

When Ibrahim (alayhis salam) will not be able to benefit his own father on the Day of Resurrection, then how can anyone else dare to grant a certificate of salvation to any of their devotees or associates in the presence of Allah?

Benefits and Issues:
There are many supporting narrations for this hadith, for example:
To declare this authentic hadith as being contrary to the Noble Qur’an can only be the act of someone who is utterly destitute and deprived of both the Qur’an and the hadith.
To say that our master Ibrahim (alayhis salam) had declared disassociation (bara’ah) is not contrary to the fact that on the Day of Resurrection, when he sees his father, due to the paternal relationship—which is a natural matter—he will try to save his father from the punishment of Hell. However, this attempt will not be successful in the court of Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
It is thus understood that before Allah, all the prophets and saints are powerless; only what Allah wills comes to pass.

Hadith Commentary:
Azar will not be granted Paradise, but Allah, the Exalted, will change Azar’s appearance and cast him into Hellfire in order to protect Ibrahim alayhis salam from disgrace, so that in the general assembly on the Day of Judgment, Azar will not be recognized and thus will not become a cause of embarrassment for Ibrahim alayhis salam.

From this, it is also understood that on the Day of Judgment, the intercession (shafa‘ah) of the noble Prophets will only benefit those for whom Allah’s mercy is destined.

has this very meaning.

Allahumma, grant us the intercession of Your beloved Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam on the Day of Judgment. Ameen.

Hadith Commentary:
On the Day of Resurrection, Ibrahim (alayhis salam) will plead before Allah, “O Lord! Do not disgrace me on the Day of Resurrection in front of all the first and the last, when the father is being punished and the son is standing and witnessing it.”

On the Day of Resurrection, Ibrahim (alayhis salam) will see his father, whose face will be covered with darkness and dust. At that moment, he will say to his father:
“Did I not tell you not to disobey me?”
The father will say:
“After today, I will not disobey you.”
Then Ibrahim (alayhis salam) will plead to Allah:
“O my Lord! What humiliation could be greater than this, that my father is being humiliated and is deprived of Your mercy?”
Then Allah will say to Ibrahim (alayhis salam):
“Just look at your feet.”
When he looks, he will see a badger, covered in filth. Then, that badger will be seized by its feet and thrown into Hellfire.

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Ahadith al-Anbiya, Hadith: 3350)

That is, his father will enter Hellfire, but in order to save Ibrahim (alayhis salam) from disgrace, Allah will transform his father’s appearance into that of a badger and cast him into Hellfire in that form, so that his identity will not be recognized by others and thus it will not be a cause of disgrace or shame for Ibrahim (alayhis salam).

Wallahu al-musta‘an.
