Hadith 3232

Narrated Abu 'Is-haq-Ash-Shaibani: I asked Zir bin Hubaish regarding the Statement of Allah: "And was at a distance Of but two bowlengths Or (even) nearer; So did (Allah) convey The Inspiration to His slave (Gabriel) and then he (Gabriel) Conveyed (that to Muhammad). (53.9-10) On that, Zir said, "Ibn Mas`ud informed us that the Prophet had seen Gabriel having 600 wings."

Understanding the Hadith:
The verse mentions the distance between the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and Jibril (alayhis salam), as the hadith is also clarifying this, and this is also evident from the context of the Qur'an. Those who interpret this verse as referring to the distance between Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), their opinion is not correct.

Hadith Commentary:

➊ The question was asked regarding the verse: “Then He revealed to His servant what He revealed” (), so it was explained that Ibn Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhu) narrated to us that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw Jibril (alayhis salam) in his original form, and he had six hundred wings.

➋ In this narration, it is established that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw Jibril (alayhis salam) in his true form, and this is a great sign among the signs of Allah, which was shown to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The number of wings of Jibril (alayhis salam) is also mentioned explicitly, which is six hundred.

➌ The statement “Then He revealed to His servant what He revealed” is from the clear verses of the Qur’an, and its reality is known only to Allah. We affirm it as it has come, without delving into its modality (bi-la kayf), and we do not interpret it metaphorically.

➍ The seeing of Jibril (alayhis salam) by the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in his original form is established from authentic narrations, and this is the position of the majority of the scholars (rahimahumullah).

➎ In this hadith, there is also evidence for the greatness and might of the angels, and that Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) has created them with such strength and form as He wills.
