Narrated Nafi`: `Umar bin Al-Khattab said, "O Allah's Apostle! I vowed to observe I`tikaf for one day during the Prelslamic period." The Prophet ordered him to fulfill his vow. `Umar gained two lady captives from the war prisoners of Hunain and he left them in some of the houses at Mecca. When Allah's Apostle freed the captives of Hunain without ransom, they came out walking in the streets. `Umar said (to his son), "O `Abdullah! See what is the matter." `Abdullah replied, "Allah's Apostle has freed the captives without ransom." He said (to him), "Go and set free those two slave girls." (Nafi` added:) Allah's Apostle did not perform the `Umra from Al-Jarana, and if he had performed the `Umra, it would not have been hidden from `Abdullah.

Hadith Commentary:
The translation of the chapter is derived from the fact that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) granted two slave girls from the khums to Umar (radi Allahu anhu) as a favor.
In the narration, it is mentioned that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not enter into the state of ihram for ‘umrah from Ji‘ranah.
However, many other people have reported that when the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had completed (the campaigns of) Hunayn and Ta’if, he entered into ihram for ‘umrah from Ji‘ranah, and affirmation takes precedence over negation.
It is possible that Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) was aware of this, but did not narrate it to Nafi‘. From this hadith, it is also evident that if a person makes a vow to perform a good deed while in a state of disbelief, then after accepting Islam, he must fulfill that vow.
The act of freeing the captives of Hunayn without compensation is also among those great humanitarian deeds of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) for which the Muslim Ummah will always be proud.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
In this narration, it is explicitly stated that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave two slave girls from the spoils of war (khums) to Umar (radi Allahu anhu).
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has presented this hadith to establish the discretionary authority of the leader (imam) of the time regarding the distribution of khums. In this narration, it is mentioned that the ihram for ‘umrah was not donned from the place of Ji‘irranah, whereas in many other narrations it is reported that when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) finished with Hunayn and Ta’if, he donned the ihram for ‘umrah from Ji‘irranah. It is possible that Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) forgot this, or he remembered it but did not relate this matter to Nafi‘.
In any case, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did don the ihram for ‘umrah from Ji‘irranah.
➋
To set free the captives of Hunayn without compensation was a great act of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), for which the Muslim Ummah can never be proud enough.
What could be a greater act of compassion for humanity than this?
