Hadith Commentary: Qastallani said: Perhaps the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) wore this patched cloak out of humility or by coincidence, not that he would intentionally wear a patched cloak, because his noble habit was to wear whatever garment was available, and he would wear very clean, pure, and bright clothes. However, he refrained from adornment and embellishment. The Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) shoes, his cup, and his ring—all of these were preserved as mementos, but they were not distributed. This proves that the Companions and the great Caliphs fully observed the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) instruction: “We, the group of Prophets, are not inherited from” (nahnu ma‘shar al-anbiya la nurath), keeping it completely in view (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Hadith Commentary:
➊
It was the noble habit of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that he would wear whatever clothing was available, however, his clothing would always be clean, bright, and pure. He would, however, avoid adornment and ostentation.
A patched cloak was sometimes worn either out of humility or by coincidence; deliberately wearing torn or old clothing was not befitting of his status. In any case, his clothing was preserved as a keepsake, and it was not distributed nor was the principle of inheritance applied to it. Eventually, with the passage of time, it too ceased to exist.
➋
One reason for the absence of these noble relics was that the fortunate person who possessed any sign or relic of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would make a bequest that after their death, it should be buried with them in their grave. For example, a woman made a cloak with her own hands for the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and presented it to him as a gift.
He accepted it and wore it.
Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (radi Allahu anhu), desiring that it be his shroud, requested that cloak from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
Ultimately, that very cloak became his shroud.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Jana'iz, Hadith: 1277)
Similarly, a shirt of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was put on the leader of the hypocrites, Abdullah ibn Ubayy, and it too was used as a shroud and buried in the grave.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Jana'iz, Hadith: 1270)
