Narrated Aisha: Allah's Apostle died, and there was nothing in my house that a living being could eat, except some barley Lying on a shelf. So, I ate of it for a long period and measured it, and (after a short period) it was consumed.

The Chapter of Sahih Bukhari Hadith Number: 3097: «بَابُ نَفَقَةِ نِسَاءِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ وَفَاتِهِ:»
Relevance between the Chapter Heading and the Hadith:
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah alluded in the chapter heading to the matter of the maintenance (nafaqah) of the purified wives (azwaj mutahharat) radi Allahu anhunna of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he presented the hadith to establish this issue, namely that Umm Aishah radi Allahu anha had nothing more than half a wasq of barley, which is sustenance for a living being. The relevance between the chapter heading and the hadith is as follows: the barley in the possession of Umm Aishah radi Allahu anha was not received as inheritance, rather its expense was upon the public treasury (bayt al-mal). If this barley had been from inheritance, it would have been taken from her.
Ibn al-Munir rahimahullah writes:
«وجه مطابقة الترجمة لحديث عائشة، قولها، فأكلت منه حتى طال على فكلته ففني، و لم تذكر أنها أخذته فى نصيبها.» [المتواري، ص: 185]
The correspondence between the chapter heading and the hadith of Sayyidah Aishah radi Allahu anha is that Umm Aishah radi Allahu anha said that she kept eating from it (the barley), and when she began to measure it, it finished. Therefore, Sayyidah Aishah radi Allahu anha did not say that she received this as inheritance (rather, it was given to her from the public treasury).
Imam Qastallani rahimahullah says:
«مطابقة الحديث للترجمة فى قولها: فأكلت منه . . . إلخ فأنها لم تذكر أنها أخذته فى نصيبها بالميراث إذ لو لم تستحق النفقة لأخذ الشعير منها بيت المال.» [ارشاد الساري، ج 5، ص: 466 - عمدة القاري، 1570، ص: 42]
That is, the correspondence between the chapter heading and the hadith is that her statement, “I kept eating from it,” does not mention that this (barley) was received by her as inheritance, rather this maintenance was provided to her from the public treasury (bayt al-mal). Abu Yahya Zakariya al-Shafi’i rahimahullah is also inclined towards this correspondence. [منحة الباري، ج 6، ص: 211-212]
Allamah Muhammad al-Tawudi ibn Sawdah says:
«”فأكلت منه“ أى و لم تورث و هو وجه الترجمة.» [حاشية التاودي بن سودة، ج 3، ص: 269]
From the discussion of these commentators, it becomes clear that the barley of Umm Aishah radi Allahu anha was made available to her from the public treasury (bayt al-mal), not from the inheritance of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. From here lies the relevance between the chapter heading and the hadith.

Hadith Commentary:
Allah had placed blessing (barakah) in this barley.
When Aisha (radi Allahu anha) measured it, it was as if there was a deficiency in reliance (tawakkul).
The blessing departed.
As for what is mentioned in another hadith, that if you measure the grain, there will be blessing for you,
the meaning is that when buying or receiving it, or whenever you take some from it, measure that portion—do not measure all of it; place your trust in Allah.
The relevance of this hadith to the chapter heading is that this barley did not come to Aisha (radi Allahu anha) as inheritance, but rather her expenses were upon the Bayt al-Mal (public treasury).
If her expenses had not been the responsibility of the Bayt al-Mal, then after the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passing, that barley would have been taken from her.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
This hadith has been brought under the mentioned heading because if Aisha (radi Allahu anha) were not entitled to maintenance and provision after the passing of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), then whatever she took from him would have been deposited into the public treasury (bayt al-mal).
➋
This hadith shows that measuring it out became the cause of its depletion.
Although it is mentioned in the hadith:
“You should measure out the grain, for there is blessing in it.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Buyu’, Hadith: 2128)
The meaning of this is that measuring and weighing can be done at the time of buying and selling; however, at the time of eating and drinking, it is disliked (makruh). It is as if doing so affects reliance (tawakkul) upon Allah.
