Hadith Commentary: It is a Sunnah to sincerely welcome back the mujahideen upon their return. The esteemed Imam rahimahullah is expressing this very purpose. People used to go as far as a mountain pass near Madinah to bid farewell to their guests. This very place came to be known as Thaniyyat al-Wada‘. The details of the Battle of Tabuk will be mentioned in the Book of Maghazi.

Hadith Commentary: ➊ By "Thaniyyat al-Wada‘" is meant the direction from Madinah Tayyibah towards Tabuk, because it is mentioned in Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi that when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) returned from the expedition of Tabuk, the people went out to Thaniyyat al-Wada‘ to welcome him. Hazrat Sa’ib says that he was also with them, and at that time he was a young boy. (Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, al-Jihad, Hadith: 1718)
➋ There are Thaniyyat al-Wada‘ on all four sides of Madinah Tayyibah, because a path located in the slope of a mountain is called a "thaniyyah." When people would go to bid someone farewell, they would go up to these places; therefore, these locations were called "Thaniyyat al-Wada‘." (‘Umdat al-Qari: 10/414)
