Hadith 3071

Narrated Um Khalid: (the daughter of Khalid bin Sa`id) I went to Allah's Apostle with my father and I was Nearing a yellow shirt. Allah's Apostle said, "Sanah, Sanah!" (`Abdullah, the narrator, said that 'Sanah' meant 'good' in the Ethiopian language). I then started playing with the seal of Prophethood (in between the Prophet's shoulders) and my father rebuked me harshly for that. Allah's Apostle said. "Leave her," and then Allah's Apostle (invoked Allah to grant me a long life) by saying (thrice), "Wear this dress till it is worn out and then wear it till it is worn out, and then wear it till it is worn out." (The narrator adds, "It is said that she lived for a long period, wearing that (yellow) dress till its color became dark because of long wear.")

Hadith Commentary:
The translation of the chapter is derived from this, that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said "Sinnah," which is in the Abyssinian (Habashi) language. Imam Khalid (radi Allahu anhu) lived so many days that the cloth he wore became blackened from use.
This was the blessing of the supplication of the Noble Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Chapter of Sahih Bukhari Hadith Number: 5993: «
Relevance between the Chapter Heading and the Hadith:
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah established the chapter heading regarding a child playing, being kissed, and laughed at, but the hadith mentioned under this chapter does not correspond to one aspect of the chapter heading. Imam Bukhari rahimahullah mentioned kissing in the chapter heading, but in the hadith itself, there is no mention of kissing at all. Thus, Allamah Ibn al-Teen rahimahullah states:
«ليس فى الخبر المذكور فى الباب للتقبيل ذكر، والذي يظهر لي أن ذكر المزح بعد التقبيل من العام بعد الخاص، و أن الممازحة بالقول و الفعل مع الصغيرة إنما يقصد به التأنيس و التقبيل من جملة ذالك.» (1)
“In this transmitted hadith, there is no mention of kissing, so it is possible that since the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not prevent the girl from touching his blessed body, this is akin to kissing. What is apparent to me is that after mentioning kissing, the mention of jesting is of the type where the general is mentioned after the specific, that is, the purpose of jesting with a young girl through words and actions is to comfort her, and kissing is included among all these acts.”
It is also possible that Imam Bukhari rahimahullah made an analogy between touching the girl and kissing her. Thus, Allamah Ibn al-Muneer rahimahullah states:
«جعل تمكين النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم لها من ذالك يتنزّل منزلة ابتدائه بتناولها لتعلب، و قاس قبلة الصغيرة على المماسة.» (2)
Badr al-Din Ibn Jama‘ah rahimahullah states:
“It is most likely that the girl played with the seal (khatam) of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and from this, jesting and playing are established, and likewise, kissing the girl as well, as is apparent from the hadith.” (3)
Allamah Qastallani rahimahullah writes:
«ليس فى حديث الباب للتقبيل ذكر فيحتمل أن يكون لما لم ينهها عن مس جسده صار كالتقبيل.» (4)
“In the hadith mentioned under the chapter heading, there is no mention of kissing. It is possible that since the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not prevent her from touching his blessed body, this is akin to kissing.”
This humble and insignificant servant says that Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, in fact, only made an analogy for kissing under this chapter, but in the subsequent chapter, he clarified it with a complete proof which is related to this chapter. Imam Bukhari rahimahullah established the following chapter after this: «باب رحمة الولد وتقبيله ومعانقته», therefore, in chapter «من ترك صبية . . . . .», he made an analogy regarding kissing, and in the subsequent chapter, he presented the proof for it. Such habits of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah are well known. This humble one has also included this habit of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah in the types of chapter headings (anwa‘ al-tarajim).

Hadith Commentary: Umm Khalid was the mother of Khalid ibn Sa'id ibn al-As al-Umawi. She was born in Abyssinia and then brought to Madinah. After reaching maturity, her first marriage was to Zubair ibn al-Awwam (radi Allahu anha).

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Umm Khalid radi Allahu anhuma was the mother of Khalid bin Sa'id bin al-As al-Umawi. She was born in Abyssinia and migrated to Madinah Tayyibah. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam clothed her with a shirt with his own hands and said: "Wear it out well." That shirt remained with her for a long time. In one narration, it is mentioned that the shirt stayed with her for such a long period that it became blackened, meaning Umm Khalid radi Allahu anhuma lived for a very long time until her complexion became dark.

(2)
When she came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, she was very young, to the extent that she began to play with the Seal of Prophethood on the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he jokingly said, "Sanh, sanh." From this, it is understood that a person may joke with a young girl even if she is not a mahram. However, if there is any corrupt intention while joking, then one should avoid it.

(3)
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah has made an analogy between a kiss and joking that is based on reality. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah states that verbal and practical joking with a small girl is intended to make the child feel comfortable and familiar. Kissing also falls under this category. (Fath al-Bari: 10/522) The mention of joking after kissing in the chapter heading by Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah is like mentioning the general after the specific. And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
It is Sunnah to give this supplication to someone who wears new clothes: May Allah bless this garment for you, may you wear it until it becomes old and torn—that is, may your life be long.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
It is Sunnah to give this supplication to someone who wears new clothes: May Allah make this garment blessed for you.
May you wear it until it becomes old and take it off, meaning may your life be long.

(2)
From this hadith, it is also understood that, due to the blessing of the supplication of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Umm Khalid (radi Allahu anha) attained a long life.
In another hadith, it is mentioned that when any of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would wear new clothes, they would be given this supplication:
(tabli wa yukhlifullahu ta‘ala)
“May you wear it until it becomes old, and may Allah, the Exalted, grant you more after it.”
Other supplications have also been transmitted.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
Umm Khalid (radi Allahu anha) is the daughter of Sayyiduna Khalid bin Sa’id and the mother of Khalid bin Zubayr bin al-Awwam (radi Allahu anhu).
Therefore, she is referred to both as Umm Khalid (radi Allahu anha) and as the daughter of Khalid.

2.
The word "sanāh" is from the Habashi (Abyssinian) language.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used a word from the language of that country due to the occasion of the migration to Abyssinia, and its meaning is "beautiful" and "good."

3.
Her honorable father, Sayyiduna Khalid bin Sa’id bin al-‘As (radi Allahu anhu), participated in the second migration to Abyssinia.
Umm Khalid was born in Abyssinia, so she was named (Amah).
He himself gave her the kunyah (honorific title) Umm Khalid.
Her mother’s name was Aminah bint Khalaf.
(Fath al-Bari: 7/239)

4.
In one narration, Umm Khalid said:
At that time, I was wearing a yellow shirt, so the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used the words "sanah."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Jihad, Hadith: 3071)
It is possible that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used these words regarding both the cloak and the shirt.

Hadith Commentary: Umm Khalid was born in Abyssinia, so she had come to know the Abyssinian language. Therefore, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), being pleased with her, praised the garment in the Abyssinian language itself.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Umm Khalid radi Allahu anha was born in Abyssinia and knew the Abyssinian language; therefore, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, being pleased, praised the cloth in the Abyssinian language itself. In one narration, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam began to look at the red or yellow designs on that sheet and kept saying: "Sanah, sanah," meaning, "Very beautiful, very beautiful." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 4024)

(2)
Among the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, when anyone wore a new garment, he would be given this supplication: "May Allah allow you to wear it out well, and may Allah, the Exalted, grant you even more after it." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 4020)

(3)
In this hadith, there is mention of a black blanket which the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made Umm Khalid radi Allahu anha wear; this is what corresponds to the chapter heading.

Benefits and Issues:
It is Sunnah and recommended to give the mentioned supplication to someone who is wearing new clothes. Implicit in this is a supplication for health, well-being, and a long life for the one wearing the clothes, so that he may benefit from them fully until they wear out.
The wording mentioned in the narration is for the feminine (gender).
For the masculine, it can be said in this way as well.
