Hadith 3008

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: When it was the day (of the battle) of Badr, prisoners of war were brought including Al-Abbas who was undressed. The Prophet looked for a shirt for him. It was found that the shirt of `Abdullah bin Ubai would do, so the Prophet let him wear it. That was the reason why the Prophet took off and gave his own shirt to `Abdullah. (The narrator adds, "He had done the Prophet some favor for which the Prophet liked to reward him.")

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) clothed Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) with a shirt while he was a prisoner in a state of disbelief.
From this, the purpose of the chapter is established: that instead of leaving a prisoner naked, it is necessary to provide him with appropriate clothing.
It is necessary to treat prisoners with every moral and humane conduct.
This is the very instruction of the chapter.
The circumstances of Abdullah bin Ubayy, the hypocrite, have already been detailed; it is also established that a favor should be repaid with a favor.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:

When Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) was brought as a prisoner after the Battle of Badr to Madinah Tayyibah, he was without clothes.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) took a shirt from Abdullah bin Ubayy and made Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) wear it, because Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) was tall and only Abdullah bin Ubayy's shirt could fit him, as he too was tall.

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) repaid this favor when the chief of the hypocrites, Abdullah bin Ubayy, died, and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave him his own shirt to wear.

From this, it is understood that instead of leaving prisoners unclothed, it is necessary to provide them with appropriate clothing.
This is the teaching of Islam: that prisoners of war should be treated with moral and humane conduct.
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah), through the chapter heading he established and the hadith he presented, has proven this very issue.
