Hadith 2988

Narrated Nafi` from `Abdullah: Allah's Apostle came to Mecca through its higher region on the day of the Conquest (of Mecca) riding his she-camel on which Usama was riding behind him. Bilal and `Uthman bin Talha, one of the servants of the Ka`ba, were also accompanying him till he made his camel kneel in the mosque and ordered the latter to bring the key of the Ka`ba. He opened the door of the Ka`ba and Allah's Apostle entered in the company of Usama, Bilal and `Uthman, and stayed in it for a long period. When he came out, the people rushed to it, and `Abdullah bin `Umar was the first to enter it and found Bilal standing behind the door. He asked Bilal, "Where did the Prophet offer his prayer?" He pointed to the place where he had offered his prayer. `Abdullah said, "I forgot to ask him how many rak`at he had performed."

Hadith Commentary:
The translation of the chapter heading is derived from the fact that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had seated Usama bin Zaid (radi Allahu anhu) behind him on his she-camel.
A she-camel is also an animal, so when it is established that two people can ride on it, then by analogy, the same can be applied to a donkey.
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has brought this hadith in several places and has deduced many rulings from it, as has been explained at their respective places.
This is a significant proof of his being a mujtahid mutlaq (independent jurist), and it is as clear as daylight that all the conditions necessary for a mujtahid mutlaq were found in his noble person to the highest degree.
May Allah reward all the noble mujtahids with the best reward, those who devoted themselves entirely to the service of Islam—radi Allahu anhum wa radu anhu.
In the hadith, the word "hijaba" is the plural of "hajib," which is used for a doorkeeper.
The custodians and doorkeepers of the noble Ka'bah have always been from this family.
During the historical tour of the Bhuj Kutch region from 20th May to 8th June 1971, the writing and editing of this section's hadiths up to 2948 and 2988 were completed. May Allah Most High accept this service of hadith as ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah) for all the brothers who are enthusiasts of Sahih Bukhari—Ameen.

Hadith Commentary:

In the first hadith, it is explicitly mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) rode on a donkey and seated Usamah (radi Allahu anhu) behind him.
From this hadith, the humility of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is evident, because riding on a donkey, mounting on a saddle, or seating a small child behind oneself on a mount is a great act of humility.

The purpose of Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) is to establish, in an absolute sense, the permissibility of seating someone behind oneself on a mount.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not consider it shameful to seat someone behind himself on a mount.
This matter is established from both ahadith.
And Allah knows best.
