Hadith 2983

Narrated Wahb bin Kaisan: Jabir bin `Abdullah said, "We set out, and we were three-hundred men carrying our journey-food on our shoulders. Then we began to eat a single date each per day." A man asked (Jabir), "O Abu `Abdullah! How could a person be satisfied with a single date?" Jabir replied, "We realized the value of that one date when we could not even have that much till we reached the sea-shore, when all of a sudden we saw a huge fish cast by the sea. So, we ate of it as much as we wished for eighteen days."

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
Most likely, it was a whale, which sometimes reaches a length of eighty to one hundred feet, and is one of the wondrous creatures among the signs of Allah.
To subsist for eighteen days solely on this fish was purely a hidden support from Allah.
This incident took place in Rajab of the 8th year after Hijrah.
The relevance to the chapter is thus established: these three hundred warriors were carrying their own rations on their shoulders.
That era was also one of such hardships.
Unlike today, when all kinds of conveniences are available, yet even now, on certain occasions, a soldier still has to carry his own rations.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:

The creatures of the sea are very strange and wondrous.
The length of the whale is also from eighty to one hundred feet.
Most likely, it was this type of fish which three hundred mujahideen ate according to their desire for eighteen days.

In this hadith, it is mentioned that three hundred mujahideen were carrying their own rations on their shoulders.
In that era, armies did not have access to all kinds of facilities, so sometimes they had to carry their own rations themselves.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah’s purpose is to show that doing so is not a fault, but rather a part of military training.
In order to keep the army alert, they are kept active at all times and made to do strenuous tasks so that they do not become inclined to comfort and do not show laziness on the battlefield of jihad.
