Hadith 2954

Narrated Abu Hurairah (ra): Allah's Messenger (saws) sent us on military expedition telling us, "If you find such and such persons (he named two men from Quraish), burn them fire." Then we came to bid him farewell, when we wanted to set out, he said: "Previously I ordered you to burn so-and-so and so-and-so with fire, but as punishment with fire is done by none except Allah, if you capture them, kill them, (instead)."

Hadith Commentary:

Both of these rejected individuals struck the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) daughter, Hazrat Zaynab (radi Allahu anha), with a spear while she was pregnant, causing her miscarriage on the way.
Therefore, at first, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered that if they were found, they should be burned in fire.
Later, he ordered that they be killed.
It is understood from this that burning with fire is forbidden; initially, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave the order based on his own judgment.
Then, through divine revelation, he abrogated this.
Qastallani said that burning lice, bedbugs, etc., in fire is also disliked (makruh).
And as for those robbers for whom the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered that heated rods be applied to their eyes, that was in retaliation (qisas), because those oppressors had done the same to the companions of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
The command of Allah is:
“O you who believe! Retaliation (qisas) is prescribed for you in the case of those murdered: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female.”
That is, in retaliation, a free person will be killed for a free person, a slave for a slave, and a woman for a woman; in fact, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth will be broken.
Under this divine law, those robbers were given this severe punishment.

It is Sunnah to bid farewell at the time of travel, whether the traveler says it to the resident or, conversely, the resident says it to the traveler.
The hadith mentions the first scenario.
The second scenario can be analogized to this.
Among us, the second scenario is more common, that is, the resident bids farewell to the traveler.
