And in the explanation of Allah the Exalted’s statement: “And they ask you about menstruation. Say: It is harm, so keep away from women during menstruation, and do not approach them until they are pure. Then when they have purified themselves, go to them as Allah has commanded you (i.e., intercourse in the front, not the back). Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves.” And the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that this is a matter which Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam. Some of the people of knowledge have said that menstruation first appeared among the Children of Israel. Abu Abdullah (Imam Bukhari, may Allah have mercy on him) says that the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) includes all women.

Narrated Al-Qasim: `Aisha said, "We set out with the sole intention of performing Hajj and when we reached Sarif, (a place six miles from Mecca) I got my menses. Allah's Apostle came to me while I was weeping. He said 'What is the matter with you? Have you got your menses?' I replied, 'Yes.' He said, 'This is a thing which Allah has ordained for the daughters of Adam. So do what all the pilgrims do with the exception of the Tawaf (Circumambulation) round the Ka`ba." `Aisha added, "Allah's Apostle sacrificed cows on behalf of his wives."

Hadith Commentary:
1.
In the common manuscripts of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, there is no specific heading for this hadith; rather, it is included under the previous heading. In that case, since the previous discussion was about the menstruation being decreed for the daughters of Adam, this hadith clarifies the aforementioned purpose. However, in the manuscript of Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu, the aforementioned heading is present. In this regard, the purpose is to show that a woman in the state of menstruation has not been left entirely free of commands and prohibitions, as the Jews and Magians would isolate women during these days. It has been clarified that during these days, only the performance of specific acts of worship is restricted. During Hajj, a menstruating woman may perform the rites of Hajj at Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah. She is only prohibited from circumambulating the House of Allah (Tawaf of the Ka'bah) and performing Sa'i between Safa and Marwah. During these days, she may participate in gatherings of goodness and perform other acts of virtue. Further details regarding this will be mentioned in the Book of Hajj, insha Allah.
2.
In one narration, it is reported that Aisha radi Allahu anha said that on the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah, beef was presented to us. I asked, "Where did this come from?" It was said that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had sacrificed a cow on behalf of his noble wives radi Allahu anhunna ajma'in today, and this is its meat. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hajj, Hadith: 1709) Upon this, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah established a heading in these words: (Chapter: A man may slaughter a cow on behalf of his wives without their command) "A man may offer a sacrifice on behalf of his wife without her permission or knowledge." It should be noted that Imam Bukhari rahimahullah derived approximately thirty-five rulings from the aforementioned hadith, the explanations of which we will continue to present from time to time. The extraction of such a large number of rulings from a single hadith is a clear testament to Imam Bukhari's power of deduction and depth of insight.
