Narrated Salama bin Al-Akwa`: The Prophet passed by some people of the tribe of Bani Aslam who were practicing archery. The Prophet said, "O Bani Isma`il ! Practice archery as your father Isma`il was a great archer. Keep on throwing arrows and I am with Bani so-and-so." So one of the parties ceased throwing. Allah's Apostle said, "Why do you not throw?" They replied, "How should we throw while you are with them (i.e. on their side)?" On that the Prophet said, "Throw, and I am with all of you."

Hadith Commentary:
It is clear to those who study the noble biography (Seerah Tayyibah) that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) always endeavored to make his followers into soldiers and continuously exhorted them, day and night, to lead a life of striving (mujahadah), as is also evident from this hadith.
Along with this, it is also clear that the ancestor of the Arabs, Prophet Isma'il (alayhis salam), was himself a formidable soldier, and spear-throwing was his occupation.
In the present era, rifles, cannons, airplanes, and all other instruments of war that have come into existence are all included under this category.
To acquire proficiency in all of these and to adopt them is not contrary to piety towards Allah; rather, it is obligatory upon every Muslim to learn them.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
From the study of the noble biography (Seerah Tayyibah), it is evident that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) instructed all the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) to lead a life of soldiery and striving in the path of Allah, as is clear from the aforementioned hadith. It is also known that Prophet Isma'il (alayhis salam) was himself a great warrior, and archery was his occupation.
In the present era, all weapons of war that have come into existence—such as guns, cannons, missiles, and so on—are included in this.
It is necessary for Muslims to acquire proficiency in all of these.
➋
In one narration, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has declared this archery (ramy) itself to be strength.
(Sahih Muslim, Al-Imarah, Hadith 4946(1917))
Thus, today every government takes pride in archery (ramy).
Whichever government possesses the full strength of archery (ramy), it has superiority over others. Bombs, atomic bombs, and missiles, etc., all are included in ramy, and all instruments of war fall under the category of this ramy.

Hadith Commentary:
These archers were residents of Yemen.
The Noble Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) attributed them, in terms of lineage, to Prophet Isma'il (alayhis salam).
From this, the purpose of the chapter is established: that the people of Yemen are descendants of Isma'il (alayhis salam).
According to this hadith, learning marksmanship with rifles and other modern weaponry today is included in this glad tiding for Muslims, provided it is not for corruption, destruction, or rebellion.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah intended to establish from this hadith that the lineage of Harithah bin Amr is connected to the people of Yemen, because the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to Banu Aslam:
“O children of Isma’il! Shoot arrows.”
From this, it is understood that the people of Yemen are also from the descendants of Isma’il alayhis salam.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Virtues of the Qur’an, Chapter: The Qur’an was revealed in the dialect of Quraysh, before hadith: 4984)
because Banu Aslam are from the people of Yemen.
2.
An objection is raised to this reasoning: the fact that Banu Aslam are from Yemen does not prove that all the people of Yemen are from the descendants of Isma’il alayhis salam.
In any case, the lineage of the tribes of Rabi’ah and Mudar is connected to Isma’il alayhis salam.
There is consensus among all scholars on this.
The lineage of all the people of Yemen is certain up to Qahtan; beyond that, there is difference of opinion. However, the inclination of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah is that all the people of Yemen are from the descendants of Isma’il alayhis salam.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Virtues of the Qur’an, hadith: 4987)
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary: In the narration, there is mention of Sayyiduna Isma'il (alayhis salam).
This is the point of relevance between the chapter and the hadith.
It is also understood from this that it is better to adopt the good deeds of one's forefathers with pride.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
The inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula are the descendants of Isma'il, and the inhabitants of Sham and Palestine are the descendants of Isra'il.
Prophet Isma'il (alayhis salam) learned the Arabic language from a tribe of Yemen called Jurhum, and he was an excellent bow-maker and archer.
The heading mentioned Prophet Isma'il (alayhis salam), and the hadith also consists of his virtuous mention.
➋
From this hadith, it is also understood that putting into practice the good deeds of one's forefathers is praiseworthy, whereas merely boasting by saying "My father was a king" is blameworthy.
➌
At the end of the mentioned verse, it is stated that Prophet Isma'il (alayhis salam) was a Messenger of Allah; he was sent with the Abrahamic law (shari'ah) to the tribe of Jurhum.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is from his progeny, and his being truthful in fulfilling promises was well-known.
Whatever promise he made to Allah or to His servants, he would certainly fulfill it, even if fulfilling that promise required sacrificing his own life.
And Allah is the One whose help is sought.
