بَابُ مَنِ اسْتَعَانَ بِالضُّعَفَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ فِي الْحَرْبِ:Chapter. Whoever sought the help of poor and pious men in war.
Hadith 2896

وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ لِي : قَيْصَرُ سَأَلْتُكَ أَشْرَافُ النَّاسِ اتَّبَعُوهُ أَمْ ضُعَفَاؤُهُمْ ، فَزَعَمْتَ ضُعَفَاءَهُمْ وَهُمْ أَتْبَاعُ الرُّسُلِ .
'And Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) informed me that Caesar (the king of Rome) said to me: I asked you whether the noble people have followed him (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) or the weak and poor ones? You replied that the weak and poor ones have followed him, and it is this group that are the followers of the Prophets.'
حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ ، عَنْ مُصْعَبِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، قَالَ : رَأَى سَعْدٌ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّ لَهُ فَضْلًا عَلَى مَنْ دُونَهُ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَلْ تُنْصَرُونَ وَتُرْزَقُونَ إِلَّا بِضُعَفَائِكُمْ " .
Narrated Mus`ab bin Sa`d: Once Sa`d (bin Abi Waqqas) thought that he was superior to those who were below him in rank. On that the Prophet said, "You gain no victory or livelihood except through (the blessings and invocations of) the poor amongst you."

Hadith Commentary:
Ibn Battal said: Its interpretation is that the weak are more sincere in supplication and have greater humility in worship because their hearts are free from attachment to the adornments of the world (Fath).
That is, the weak are very firm in sincerity when supplicating, and their humility in worship is greater, and their hearts are pure from worldly embellishments.
Therefore, asking the weak to supplicate is a great source of blessing.

When Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu) felt in his heart that he was superior to others due to his wealth, bravery, and expertise in archery, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) encouraged him to adopt humility and modesty. He informed him that it is through the supplications of these righteous-natured and distressed people that you receive help, and it is by their blessing that you are provided sustenance, because their worship is sincere and their supplications are filled with humility. Moreover, their hearts are free from worldly adornments and attractions.

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has established that if a warrior attains rank with Allah due to his bravery, then a weak and feeble person attains status with Allah on account of his poverty and humility. It is likely for this very reason that all the warriors who enter the battlefield are equal partners in the spoils of war. The brave one, due to his bravery, and the weak one, due to his sincere supplications; thus, seeking prayers for success from the weak in the battlefield is a source of great goodness and blessing.

1) "He attained virtue" because he was among the earliest Muslims. He used to refer to himself as "thuluth al-Islam" (one third of Islam), meaning he was the third person to embrace Islam.
2) In this hadith, the term "weak" refers to those pious elders who do not have the ability to participate in battle, being physically disabled or weak. The prayers of such people become a cause for the Muslims' victory; therefore, they should not be considered useless, idle, or insignificant.
