Hadith 2885

Narrated `Aisha: The Prophet was vigilant one night and when he reached Medina, he said, "Would that a pious man from my companions guard me tonight!" Suddenly we heard the clatter of arms. He said, "Who is that? " He (The new comer) replied, " I am Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas and have come to guard you." So, the Prophet slept (that night).

Hadith Commentary:
In another narration, it is mentioned: until the sound of his (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) snoring was heard.
Tirmidhi has narrated from Aisha (radi Allahu anha) that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to keep a guard for protection. When this verse was revealed: ﴿وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ﴾ (al-Ma'idah: 67) (Allah will protect you from the people), then the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) dismissed the guard.
Hakim and Ibn Majah have narrated in marfu‘ form:
Standing guard for one night in jihad carries more reward than a thousand nights of worship and a thousand days of fasting.

Hadith Commentary:

In one narration it is stated:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) slept peacefully that night until we heard the sound of his snoring.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Tamanni, Hadith 7231)

The apparent wording of the narration suggests that this incident occurred before the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) migration to Madinah, whereas at that time he did not have Aisha Siddiqa (radi Allahu anha) with him, nor was Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu) present. However, the reality is that this awakening occurred one night after arriving in Madinah al-Tayyibah, as is mentioned in another narration:
When he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) woke up, Aisha (radi Allahu anha) was with him.
(Musnad Ahmad 6/141)
In the narration of Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) it is stated:
The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) used to stand guard over him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). When this verse was revealed:
﴿وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ﴾ “Allah will protect you from the people.”
(al-Ma’idah: 5/67)
he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) dismissed the guards.
(Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Tafsir al-Qur’an, Hadith 3046)

From this hadith it is understood that one should always remain cautious of the enemy, and people should protect their leader so that no one can suddenly harm him.
It is also understood that taking means and precautions is not contrary to reliance (tawakkul) upon Allah, because tawakkul is an act of the heart, while the use of means and resources pertains to the limbs and faculties.

Hadith Commentary:
Why did Maulana Waheed uz-Zaman translate this verse into poetry: "If only I could spend one night in Makkah, and the dust beneath my feet would be the exalted Idhkhir plant"? This mention of the patrol refers to the initial days upon arriving in Madinah, because at that time there was a crowd of enemies on all sides. Your (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplication for Sa’d (radi Allahu anhu) was accepted.

Hadith Commentary:

There was a throng of enemies of Islam all around in Madinah Tayyibah, so for the sake of protection, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was guarded so that no enemy could harm him.
Accordingly, Aisha (radi Allahu anha) states that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to be guarded for his protection until this noble verse was revealed:
“And Allah will protect you from the people.” ( al-Ma’ida: 5/67)
There were approximately seventeen assassination attempts on the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) during his lifetime.
After the revelation of this verse, the guarding was discontinued.
The Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) lasted 23 years; the first three years were of extremely secret propagation, and in the remaining twenty years, there were seventeen assassination attempts or conspiracies to kill him. Of these, nine attacks were from the Quraysh of Makkah, three from the Jews, three from Bedouin tribes, one from the hypocrites, and one from the King of Persia, Khosrow Parviz. It is likely that no other person in this world has faced so many assassination attempts, and each time Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) fulfilled His promise by informing him through revelation or by helping him and saving him from the enemies.

From the narrations, it is known that during the Battle of Badr, the Battle of Uhud, the Battle of Khandaq, upon returning from Khaybar, in Wadi al-Qura, during the compensatory ‘Umrah (Umrat al-Qada), and in the Battle of Hunayn, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was regularly guarded.
From this detail, it is understood that the aforementioned verse was revealed after the Battle of Hunayn. Accordingly, in one narration, it is mentioned that Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) was also among those who guarded the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
When the aforementioned verse was revealed, the guarding was discontinued, and Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) accepted Islam after the conquest of Makkah.
( Fath al-Bari: 13/270)

The intent of Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) appears to be that the word “layta” is for expressing a wish (tamanni).
Its usage is mostly for impossibilities, but sometimes it is also used for possibilities. Accordingly, in the aforementioned ahadith, standing guard and spending the night in a specific valley are among the possibilities.
The latter was wished for by Bilal (radi Allahu anhu), while the wish of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) regarding being guarded was fulfilled.

Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
Ariq:
To remain awake or stay alert.
(2)
Yahrusuni:
To stand guard for me,
to protect me.

Benefits and Issues:
This hadith establishes that a person should adopt prudence and caution, and remain vigilant against the enemy. Adopting means and resources for this purpose is not contrary to reliance upon Allah (tawakkul). In times of danger, arrangements should be made by people for the protection of their rulers. From this, the love and devotion of Sa'd radi Allahu anhu for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and his zeal for his protection, are also evident. For this reason, he became the embodiment of your statement "a righteous man." However, this incident occurred at a time when Allah had not yet given the glad tidings of His protection for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. When the verse was revealed that Allah will protect you from the people (), then there was no longer any need for outward guarding.

Explanation:
1:
That is: Sa'd radi Allahu anhu was deemed to be the embodiment of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s statement (a righteous man – رَجُلٌ صَالِحٌ).
This is a very great virtue, that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam declared someone to be (رَجُلٌ صَالِحٌ – a righteous man).
