Narrated Tha`laba bin Abi Malik: `Umar bin Al-Khattab distributed some garments amongst the women of Medina. One good garment remained, and one of those present with him said, "O chief of the believers! Give this garment to your wife, the (grand) daughter of Allah's Apostle." They meant Um Kulthum, the daughter of `Ali. `Umar said, Um Salit has more right (to have it)." Um Salit was amongst those Ansari women who had given the pledge of allegiance to Allah's Apostle.' `Umar said, "She (i.e. Um Salit) used to carry the water skins for us on the day of Uhud."

Hadith Commentary:
The meaning of "tazaffur" as "from the chest" is not correct; the correct meaning is that she would bring it lifted up. Qastallani said that Imam Bukhari rahimahullah transmitted this meaning by following Abu Salih, the scribe of Layth. The justice and fairness of Umar radi Allahu anhu should be understood from this incident. He could have given this cloak to his wife Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha, but refrained from doing so solely because she was his wife, and instead gave precedence to another person whose right was greater. This is what true justice demands.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
Umm Kulthum was the daughter of Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha and was born during the blessed life of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Ali radi Allahu anhu married her to Umar al-Faruq radi Allahu anhu at his request, but the Shia do not accept this. Rather, they interpret it as usurpation.
➋
From this hadith, we learn of Umar radi Allahu anhu’s discernment of people and his sense of justice, as instead of giving a fine new cloak to his wife Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha, he gifted it to Umm Sulayt radi Allahu anha as a reward for her services.
➌
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that in the Arabic language, the word (تَزفِرُ) is not used in the sense of “chest,” but rather it means “to carry.” (Fath al-Bari: 98/6) According to our inclination, its correct meaning here is that she used to carry the water-skin.

Hadith Commentary:
It was this very blessed deed of theirs that was made the reason for their virtue, and the cloak was given to them alone.
The insight and discernment demonstrated here by Umar (radi Allahu anhu) is worthy of as much praise as can be given—may Allah be pleased with him and grant him His pleasure.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The insight demonstrated by Umar (radi Allahu anhu) is praiseworthy beyond measure. The participation of Umm Sulayt (radi Allahu anha) in the Battle of Uhud was considered a reason for her virtue, and on this basis, this noble woman of Islam was given the cloak. In this battle, Aisha (radi Allahu anha) and Umm Sulaym (radi Allahu anha) also rendered the same services that were the cause of Umm Sulayt’s virtue. (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Jihad wal-Siyar, Hadith: 2881)
2.
It should be noted that Ali (radi Allahu anhu) himself married off Umm Kulthum (radi Allahu anha) to Umar (radi Allahu anhu) so that, from this side as well, Umar (radi Allahu anhu) would have a connection to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
