Narrated Al-Bara: On the day (of the battle) of Al-Ahzab (i.e. clans) I saw the Prophet carrying earth, and the earth was covering the whiteness of his `Abdomen. And he was saying, "Without You (O Allah!) we would have got no guidance, nor given in charity, nor prayed. So please bless us with tranquility and make firm our feet when we meet our enemies. Indeed (these) people have rebelled against (oppressed) us but never shall we yield if they try to bring affliction upon us."

Hadith Commentary:
The meaning of the final words mentioned in the hadith, "an al-awla qad baghaw 'alayna," is that: O Allah! The enemies have unjustly taken action against us and have wronged us; therefore, we have been compelled to come to the battlefield in response to them.
From this, it is evident that Islamic warfare is defensive in nature, the purpose of which is to quell great turmoil and corruption and to establish an atmosphere of peace and security.
Those who accuse Islam of bloodshed and violence are demonstrating complete ignorance of the truth.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
In the Battle of Ahzab, all the Arab tribes united and launched an assault against Islam, but Allah, the Exalted, humiliated and repelled them in disgrace.
From this hadith, it is understood that before battle, there is no harm in reciting martial poetry to incite the ranks to fighting and jihad against the disbelievers, as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself recited the aforementioned verses of poetry by Abdullah bin Rawahah (radi Allahu anhu) on this occasion.
Poetry of this kind is also narrated from Amir bin Akwa‘ (radi Allahu anhu) on the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Adab, Hadith 6148)
2.
It should be clear that the aforementioned trench was not dug around all of Madinah Tayyibah, but rather on the side that was completely open.
The Muslim army was stationed beneath Mount Sala‘.
That trench was between Mount Sala‘ and the polytheists, and it was extended in length, and it was dug from east to west on the northern side of Madinah Tayyibah towards the volcanic plain (harrah).
And Allah knows best.
