Hadith 2824

In this chapter, Abu Uthman narrated from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him.
Narrated As-Sa'-ib bin Yazid: I was in the company of Talha bin 'Ubaidullah, Sa`d, Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad and `Abdur Rahman bin `Auf and I heard none of them narrating anything from Allah's Apostle but Talha was talking about the day (of the battle) of Uhud.

Hadith Commentary:
Other Companions, out of caution, would avoid narrating excessively so that they would not inadvertently make a false statement and thus incur a grave sin. Nevertheless, narrations from all these individuals do exist, which they transmitted with great responsibility.

During the Battle of Uhud, only Talhah (radi Allahu anhu) and Sa'd (radi Allahu anhu) remained with the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and Talhah's hand became paralyzed; he received the blows of the polytheists on his own hand and protected the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Sa'd (radi Allahu anhu) is that noble Companion who was struck by the first arrow from the disbelievers, as will be mentioned in the Book of Maghazi.

Hadith Commentary:

Many of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would refrain from narrating abundantly out of caution, lest they fall into sin due to even a minor omission or addition.

In the Battle of Uhud, only Sa'd (radi Allahu anhu) and Talhah (radi Allahu anhu) remained with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The hand of Talhah (radi Allahu anhu) became paralyzed because he would shield the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) from the attacks of the polytheists with his hand. Sa'd (radi Allahu anhu) was also an excellent archer, and in the Battle of Uhud he demonstrated steadfastness. He too would relate his circumstances so that people would follow his example. There is no harm in narrating with this intention.
