Narrated Anas: My uncle Anas bin An-Nadr was absent from the Battle of Badr. He said, "O Allah's Apostle! I was absent from the first battle you fought against the pagans. (By Allah) if Allah gives me a chance to fight the pagans, no doubt. Allah will see how (bravely) I will fight." On the day of Uhud when the Muslims turned their backs and fled, he said, "O Allah! I apologize to You for what these (i.e. his companions) have done, and I denounce what these (i.e. the pagans) have done." Then he advanced and Sa`d bin Mu`adh met him. He said "O Sa`d bin Mu`adh ! By the Lord of An-Nadr, Paradise! I am smelling its aroma coming from before (the mountain of) Uhud," Later on Sa`d said, "O Allah's Apostle! I cannot achieve or do what he (i.e. Anas bin An-Nadr) did. We found more than eighty wounds by swords and arrows on his body. We found him dead and his body was mutilated so badly that none except his sister could recognize him by his fingers." We used to think that the following Verse was revealed concerning him and other men of his sort: "Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah.........." (33.23) His sister Ar-Rubbaya' broke a front tooth of a woman and Allah's Apostle ordered for retaliation. On that Anas (bin An-Nadr) said, "O Allah's Apostle! By Him Who has sent you with the Truth, my sister's tooth shall not be broken." Then the opponents of Anas's sister accepted the compensation and gave up the claim of retaliation. So Allah's Apostle said, "There are some people amongst Allah's slaves whose oaths are fulfilled by Allah when they take them."

Hadith Commentary:
Ibn Shakwal said that this person’s name was Umair bin Humaam (radi Allahu anhu).
In the narration of Muslim, it is mentioned that Umair bin Humaam (radi Allahu anhu) on the day of the Battle of Uhud took out some dates and began to eat them. Then he said, “If I remain alive until I finish these dates, that would be a long life indeed.” So he went forth to fight and was martyred.
In Asad al-Ghabah, it is stated that Umair was martyred on the day of Badr, and he was the first among the Ansar to be martyred in battle in the path of Allah.
Ibn Ishaq narrated that when Umair bin Humaam (radi Allahu anhu) engaged in battle with the disbelievers at Badr, he began to say, “I am going to Allah. I have no provision or wealth, but only the fear of Allah, deeds that will benefit in the Hereafter, and patience in jihad.”
Indeed, the fear of Allah is a most strengthening matter.
Anas bin Nadr al-Ansari (radi Allahu anhu) met Umar bin Khattab (radi Allahu anhu), who was anxious.
He said, “A great calamity has occurred. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has been martyred.”
Anas (radi Allahu anhu) said, “Then what will we do by remaining alive? The God of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is alive. Fight and die upon this religion upon which the Prophet fought.” Saying this, Anas bin Nadr (radi Allahu anhu) plunged into the ranks of the disbelievers and continued fighting until he was martyred.
It is said that in the Battle of Uhud, the flag of the disbelievers was held by Talhah bin Abi Talhah, and he was killed by Ali (radi Allahu anhu).
Then Uthman bin Abi Talhah took it, and he was killed by Amir Hamzah.
Then Abu Sa’id bin Abi Talhah took it, and he was killed by Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu).
Then Nafi’ bin Talhah bin Abi Talhah took it, and he was killed by Asim bin Thabit al-Ansari (radi Allahu anhu).
Then Harith bin Talhah bin Abi Talhah took it, and he too was killed by Asim.
Then Kilab bin Abi Talhah took it, and he was killed by Zubair (radi Allahu anhu).
Then Jallas bin Talhah, then Arta’ah bin Shurahbil, and he was killed by Ali (radi Allahu anhu).
Then Shurayh bin Qariz, and he too was killed.
Then Sawab, a slave, and he was killed by Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu) or Ali (radi Allahu anhu) or Qazman (radi Allahu anhu).
After this, the disbelievers fled (Wahidi).
Under this hadith, another discourse of the late Mawlana Waheed al-Zaman is presented, which is worthy of attentive reading.
He says:
Muslims! Our forefathers spread Islam throughout the world by displaying such bravery and shedding their blood, and they acquired such a vast land whose western boundary reached Tunis and Andalus, that is, Spain, and in the east to China and Brahma, and in the north to Russia, and in the south the provinces of Rome, Iran, Turan, India, Arabia, Sham, Egypt, and Africa were under their dominion.
Our indulgence and irreligiousness have now brought us to the point that, except for the very heart of Arabia, even the surrounding lands are falling into the hands of the disbelievers, and the lands have already been lost. Now, whatever remains, preserve it. If you awaken from the slumber of heedlessness, then hold firmly to the Qur’an and Hadith.
And upon us is only to convey (Wahidi).

Hadith Commentary:

It appears that Anas bin Nadr (radi Allahu anhu) was present in Madinah Tayyibah at the time of the Battle of Badr. Perhaps he had gone somewhere outside for some personal matter. Although there had been skirmishes with the disbelievers even before the Battle of Badr, the Battle of Badr was the first major war that took place between disbelief and Islam.

Anas bin Nadr (radi Allahu anhu) smelled the fragrance of Paradise at the foothills of Uhud—was this fragrance real, or should it be interpreted metaphorically? Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has mentioned both interpretations, but in our view, there is no need to interpret it metaphorically; rather, there is safety in affirming it in its apparent and real meaning. It is mentioned in narrations that when the time of a believer’s death approaches, he sees Paradise and is blessed with its fragrance. Allah Himself has said:
“If the deceased is among those brought near (to Allah), then (for him) is rest, bounty, and a garden of bliss.” ()
