Hadith 2741

Narrated Al-Aswad: In the presence of `Aisha some people mentioned that the Prophet had appointed `Ali by will as his successor. `Aisha said, "When did he appoint him by will? Verily when he died he was resting against my chest (or said: in my lap) and he asked for a wash-basin and then collapsed while in that state, and I could not even perceive that he had died, so when did he appoint him by will?"

Hadith Commentary:
Aishah (radi Allahu anha) has denied any special bequest, stating that from the time of illness until his passing, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) remained with me, and he passed away in my lap. If he had appointed Ali (radi Allahu anhu) as a legatee (wasiyy) or designated him as a caliph, then at the very least I would have known about it. On this basis, the propaganda that Ali (radi Allahu anhu) is the legatee or the nominated caliph of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is baseless.

Ali (radi Allahu anhu) himself has also strongly refuted this alleged bequest. He said:
"By the One Who split the grain and created the soul! We have nothing except the Book of Allah and what is in this scroll."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Diyat, Hadith: 6915)

Apart from this, Ali (radi Allahu anhu) never made any claim for himself regarding the caliphate, neither before nor after it. And even on the day of Saqifah, no one made any reference to such a bequest. This is merely unfounded propaganda by the Rawafid, which holds no weight.
