Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Dumat al-Jandal is the name of a city that was near Tabuk; its king was Ukaydir ibn Abd al-Malik, who was a Christian. Khalid ibn al-Walid (radi Allahu anhu) captured him and brought him. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) set him free because he agreed to a peace treaty on the condition of paying jizyah (tax levied on non-Muslims under Muslim rule). A robe of silk (sundus) was sent by him as a gift. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave that robe to Ali (radi Allahu anhu) and said: "Distribute it among the Fatimahs." (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Libas wa al-Zinah, Hadith: 5422(2071)) So Ali (radi Allahu anhu) divided it into four pieces and distributed them among his wife Fatimah (radi Allahu anha), his respected mother Fatimah bint Asad, as well as Fatimah bint Hamzah, and Fatimah bint Abi Talib (Umm Hani).
(2)
From this narration, it is understood that the gifts of disbelievers and polytheists can be accepted, provided that the political and social circumstances are favorable. If the circumstances are unfavorable, then the exchange of gifts is not permissible.
