أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Narrated `Abdullah bin Abu Qatada Al-Aslami: That his father said, "One day I was sitting with some of the Prophet's companions on the way to Mecca. Allah's Apostle was ahead of us. All of my companions were in the state of Ihram while I was a non-Muhrim. They saw an onager while I was busy repairing my shoes, so they did not tell me about it but they wished I had seen it. By chance I looked up and saw it. So, I turned to the horse, saddled it and rode on it, forgetting to take the spear and the whip. I asked them if they could hand over to me the whip and the spear but they said, 'No, by Allah, we shall not help you in that in any way.' I became angry and got down from the horse, picked up both the things and rode the horse again. I attacked the onager and slaughtered it, and brought it (after it had been dead). They took it (cooked some of it) and started eating it, but they doubted whether it was allowed for them to eat it or not, as they were in the state of Ihram. So, we proceeded and I hid with me one of its fore-legs. When we met Allah's Apostle and asked him about the case, he asked, 'Do you have a portion of it with you?' I replied in the affirmative and gave him that fleshy foreleg which he ate completely while he was in the state of Ihram .
Explanation & Benefits

Hadith Commentary:
The companions refused to assist because they were in the state of ihram, and in the state of ihram, neither is it permissible to hunt nor to assist in hunting.
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself expressed a desire for this meat as a gift.
The objective of the chapter is thus fulfilled from this.
Abu Qatadah al-Salmi (radi Allahu anhu) would have recited "Bismillah" before shooting the arrow.
Therefore, that game was lawful (halal).
Among friends and companions, it is a common practice to give and receive gifts, and sometimes even to make a request for something mutually; the permissibility of this is established from here.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The companions of Sayyiduna Qatadah (radi Allahu anhu) refused to hand over the whip and spear because they were in a state of ihram, and in the state of ihram, neither is it permissible to hunt nor is it permissible to assist anyone in hunting.
(2)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself requested the meat of the wild donkey (gorkhar), just as he expressed a desire to receive the gift of a goat from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (radi Allahu anhu).
In reality, there are stern warnings and condemnation regarding asking (for things) mentioned in the hadiths.
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) wants to establish that making a request for something in the informal environment among companions is a different matter; it does not fall under the warning that has come in the hadiths regarding asking (for things).
Among friends and loved ones, giving and receiving gifts, and at times even making requests oneself, is a common custom among us as well.
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has established its permissibility.
