Hadith 2568

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "I shall accept the invitation even if I were invited to a meal of a sheep's trotter, and I shall accept the gift even if it were an arm or a trotter of a sheep."

Hadith Commentary:
No matter how small a gift may be, it is worthy of appreciation, and whatever is presented in an invitation, the invitation is in any case worthy of acceptance.
These actions foster mutual love, which is the true objective of Islam.
From this, it is established that meat may be presented as a gift (hibah), present (tuhfah), or offering (hadiyyah).
According to the esteemed Imam rahimahullah, the term "hibah" can be applied to all of these.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The meat of the goat’s foreleg is the best part.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) liked it very much.
The reason for this preference was that it remains separate from impurities and filth, whereas the legs of the goat are not given as much importance.

(2)
The meaning of the statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is that whether something good or something insignificant is presented as a gift or in invitation, it should be accepted wholeheartedly, without showing any displeasure on one’s face. By doing so, relationships remain pleasant and feelings of love are nurtured among members of society.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) encouraged the acceptance of even the smallest of gifts.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:

No matter how small the share may be, I will accept it so that I do not break the heart of any Muslim. These are the noble manners due to which Allah honored you with the verse: “And indeed, you are of a great moral character” (: al-Qalam: 4).

Not attending the invitations of the poor, harboring hatred towards the poor—this is arrogance like that of Pharaoh. Such arrogant people are more despicable in the sight of Allah than even a mosquito.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The intent of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah is that if, at a wedding feast (walimah), only the head and feet of an animal (siri paye) are served, even then one must accept the invitation. One should avoid rejecting it.

(2)
From this hadith, the perfect humility and excellent character of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam become evident. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam encouraged the acceptance of invitations because it increases love and affection, and it is also a source of happiness and joy for the one arranging the invitation. Furthermore, it provides an excellent opportunity to gather together. (Fath al-Bari: 9/306) In any case, one should never hurt one’s brother’s feelings, even if he invites you to something simple. Not attending the invitation of the poor and showing aversion to them is arrogance (Fir‘awn-like behavior). Such arrogant people are more despicable in the sight of Allah Ta‘ala than insects and vermin. And Allah is the One whose help is sought.

Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues:
➊ If there is no Shar‘i (Islamic legal) impediment or excuse in accepting an invitation, then it should be accepted even while in a state of fasting.
➋ If the host insists and the fast is voluntary (nafl), then it may even be broken.
➌ If the host does not insist, then in the state of fasting, one should supplicate for goodness, blessings, mercy, and forgiveness for him, or perform prayer in his house for the sake of goodness and blessings.

English Commentary:
1:
That is, the owner of the food should supplicate for blessing,
because in the narration of Tabarani from Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu, the words ((وَإِنْ كَانَ صَائِمََا فَلْيَدْعُ بِالْبَرَكَةِ)) have been reported,
and in the hadith of the chapter, after ((فَلْیُصَلِّ)), the words “meaning supplication (du'a)” have appeared—this is an explanation of ((فَلْیُصَلِّ)), which has been given either by Imam Tirmidhi himself or by another narrator.
The meaning is that here, performing prayer (salah) is not intended; rather, what is meant is supplication (du'a).
Some people have taken it upon its apparent meaning.
In that case, the meaning of this hadith would be that he should accept the invitation of the host, go to his house, and in some corner of the house, perform two units (rak‘ah) of prayer, just as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed in the house of Umm Sulaym radi Allahu anha.

Benefits and Issues:
Muslims should, from time to time, arrange gatherings and invitations among themselves; this strengthens mutual relationships and increases love.
A fasting person should also participate in the invitation and make supplication for them.
If the fast is voluntary (nafl), it is permissible to break it.
