Hadith 2469

Narrated Anas: Allah's Apostle took an oath that he would not go to his wives for one month as his foot had been sprained. He stayed in an upper room when `Umar went to him and said, "Have you divorced your wives?" He said, "No, but I have taken an oath that I would not go to them for one month." The Prophet stayed there for twenty-nine days, and then came down and went to his wives.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In this narration, the word 'ulya' has appeared, which is used for an upper room (balakhana). In the previous narration, the word 'mashrabah' was mentioned, which refers to a room at the front of the house designated for drinking and serving beverages; it is also used for an upper room (balakhana). Now, the distinctive characteristic between them has ceased, and it has come to be used for any room that is made for guests to sit in. When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) became displeased with his wives and separated himself from them, he stayed in this upper room (balakhana) which is mentioned in the hadith. This incident occurred in the ninth year of Hijrah, but due to a misunderstanding, the narrator has also mentioned the incident of the sprain in the foot. The incident of the sprain in the foot occurred in the fifth year of Hijrah when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) fell from a horse. There is a gap of four years between these two incidents. When Humaid narrates at length from Hazrat Anas (radi Allahu anhu), he sometimes combines both incidents, whereas other narrators mention only the incident of taking an oath.
(2)
When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was injured, he also rested in this same upper room (balakhana). The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would come to visit and care for him, and he would perform prayers in this same room. In any case, Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) wants to establish that it is permissible to build an upper room (balakhana) on the roof of a house, provided that the rights of neighbors are not affected. And Allah knows best.
