Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
Some wretched people have a nature such that they quarrel and cause discord among themselves over trivial matters.
Such people are very evil in the sight of Allah.
The full translation of the verse is as follows: Among the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the most quarrelsome of opponents.
It is said that this verse was revealed regarding Akhnas ibn Shurayq.
He came to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and, claiming Islam, began to speak sweet words.
Yet in his heart, he harbored hypocrisy.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
By "aladd al-khasm" is meant a person who quarrels with people over trivial matters or who possesses great skill in defending falsehood.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has also mentioned this hadith in the Book of Tafsir; however, the purpose of mentioning it at this point is that, generally, in cases of oppression and disputes, matters escalate to quarrels and even fighting. Therefore, as much as possible, one should avoid quarrels and fighting.
(2)
It should be noted that in the noble verse, (أَلَدُّ الْخِصَامِ), the reference is to Akhnas ibn Shurayq, who was a hypocrite during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
Fighting, quarreling, picking disputes over trivial matters, and being argumentative are habits of some people. Such behavior is extremely harmful and detrimental in matters of governance, because it endangers collectivity. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has mentioned great virtue in abandoning this kind of fighting and quarreling. He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“I guarantee a house in the surroundings of Paradise for the one who abandons argumentation even when he is in the right.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-Adab, Hadith: 4800)
➋
In any case, the person who is always quarrelsome and, harboring malice and stubbornness, does not accept the truth, is extremely disliked in the sight of Allah. This meaning includes both disbelievers and Muslims.

also refers to severity and expertise in disputation.
The purpose is:
His occupation is merely to quarrel and argue,
he does not care whether it is permissible or impermissible, or about truth and falsehood,
Quarreling to invalidate the truth and establish falsehood is also included in this.

Explanation:
1:
This is a reference to the statement of Allah:
﴿وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يُعْجِبُكَ قَوْلُهُ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَيُشْهِدُ اللّهَ عَلَى مَا فِي قَلْبِهِ وَهُوَ أَلَدُّ الْخِصَامِ﴾ (Al-Baqarah: 204).
That is, among the people there are some whose speech pleases you in worldly life, while he makes Allah a witness to what is in his heart,
but in reality, he is the most quarrelsome of opponents.

By this is meant the person who is constantly arguing, who does not abandon obstinacy and dispute even when he is upon falsehood and lies, and who disputes with everyone and about everything in opposition to the truth. And Allah knows best.
