Hadith 2349

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d: We used to be very happy on Friday as an old lady used to cut some roots of the Silq, which we used to plant on the banks of our small water streams, and cook them in a pot of her's, adding to them, some grains of barley. (Ya'qub, the sub-narrator said, "I think the narrator mentioned that the food did not contain fat or melted fat (taken from meat).") When we offered the Friday prayer we would go to her and she would serve us with the dish. So, we used to be happy on Fridays because of that. We used not to take our meals or the midday nap except after the Jumua prayer (i.e. Friday prayer).

Hadith Commentary:
It is mentioned that the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) used to plant beets on the borders of their gardens.
From this, the subject matter of the chapter is established. Furthermore, the zeal for service shown by that elderly woman is proven to be enviable,
who would make such arrangements to host the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and would invite the Companions of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to her home every Friday.
As for the porridge prepared from a mixture of beets and barley, what can be said of its taste and delicacy!
In any case, many rulings can be derived from this hadith.
Among them is that it is Sunnah on the day of Jumu‘ah (Friday) to have the midday meal and to take a siesta (qaylulah) after the Friday prayer.
It is also established that women, when necessary, may go to their fields.
However, observing the Islamic legal covering (shar‘i hijab) is essential.

Hadith Commentary:
Tree planting has always been a beloved occupation of mankind.
The ruling for planting trees and for agriculture is the same.
Farmers plant trees along the edges of their fields, while within the fields, the crops of the region are cultivated. Channels are constructed to irrigate the fields, and the areas around these channels often remain moist; therefore, suitable vegetables are cultivated there or seasonal plants are planted.
It is mentioned in the hadith that at that time, beets were cultivated along the edges of the channels, whose curry is highly favored and can be presented as an excellent dish.
