Hadith 2266

Narrated Ibn Juraij from `Abdullah bin Abu Mulaika from his grandfather a similar story: A man bit the hand of another man and caused his own tooth to fall out, but Abu Bakr judged that he had no right for compensation (for the broken tooth).

Hadith Commentary:
The subject of the chapter is evident from the fact that during the expedition of Tabuk, Hazrat Ya’la bin Umayyah radi Allahu anhu took another man along with him as a laborer.
The hadith mentions the expedition of Tabuk, which is also called Jaysh al-‘Usrah (the Army of Hardship).
Alhamdulillah, I am writing these notes while sitting in Madinah al-Munawwarah.
From here, Tabuk is located several hundred miles away on the route to Jordan, and it is a district under the government of Saudi Arabia.
The Christians of Syria had devised a military plan against Islam at this border, the timely news of which reached the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam advanced for defense.
Upon hearing this, the courage of the Christians faltered.
This journey was undertaken at the very height of the summer season, due to which the Muslim warriors had to face many hardships.
This is mentioned in the verses of Surah al-Tawbah.
Along with this, those hypocrites are also mentioned who, by making excuses, stayed behind in this trial.
Regarding them, the verse ﴿يَعْتَذِرُونَ إِلَيْكُمْ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ﴾ (, al-Tawbah: 94) was revealed.
However, there were a few sincere believers as well who remained among those who stayed behind.
Later, their repentance was accepted.
Alhamdulillah, these notes were written today, 22nd Safar, while sitting in Masjid al-Nabawi.

Hadith Commentary:
Although the objective of jihad is to attain reward, this objective does not contradict seeking assistance from a servant. However, it is not permissible to hire a laborer for the purpose of sending him to the battlefield while one remains behind, because jihad is an obligation upon every Muslim so that the religion of Allah may be elevated. Deputizing another in this obligation is not valid.

The purpose of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah is to show that it is permissible to take a laborer along for personal service during jihad, because Ya’la ibn Umayyah radi Allahu anhu kept a laborer with him.
