بَابُ صَبِّ الْمَاءِ عَلَى الْبَوْلِ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ:Chapter. The pouring of water over the urine in the mosque.
Hadith 220

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَامَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ فَبَالَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَتَنَاوَلَهُ النَّاسُ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " دَعُوهُ وَهَرِيقُوا عَلَى بَوْلِهِ سَجْلًا مِنْ مَاءٍ أَوْ ذَنُوبًا مِنْ مَاءٍ ، فَإِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُمْ مُيَسِّرِينَ وَلَمْ تُبْعَثُوا مُعَسِّرِينَ " .
Narrated Abu Huraira: A Bedouin stood up and started making water in the mosque. The people caught him but the Prophet ordered them to leave him and to pour a bucket or a tumbler of water over the place where he had passed the urine. The Prophet then said, "You have been sent to make things easy and not to make them difficult."

There was a risk of disease if he were stopped in the middle, so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, out of compassion, let him finish and then later explained to him not to do such an act again, and had that place purified. If only Muslims today could attain such character!

Hadith Commentary:
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah’s intent is to show that there is no difference between a mosque and a non-mosque regarding the impurity of urine; just as the floor of a non-mosque becomes impure due to urine, similarly, the floor of a mosque also becomes impure if someone urinates on it. Just as the ground outside becomes pure by pouring water over it, likewise, pouring water over the ground of the mosque is sufficient for purification.
Perhaps someone might think that, due to the mosque’s special status as a place of worship, there should be a particular method for its purification. Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has made it clear that, without doubt, mosques certainly possess a special honor. However, in the case of impurity, the method of purification is the same as that for ordinary land.
Apparently, an objection may arise that pouring water over urine would only cause it to spread further, thereby increasing the impurity in the mosque. But the matter is that when water is poured over the urine, it becomes overpowered and takes the ruling of flowing water; in this way, that place becomes pure.
Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has titled this hadith with the words that when the ground becomes impure, pouring water over it is sufficient; there is no need to dig it up.
The requirement of “ease and facilitation” (yusr and taysir) is also that the method of purification for the ground should be limited to the Prophetic way.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that the ahadith which are relied upon regarding digging up the ground are not authentic, and some are mursal narrations which are not suitable as evidence.
