Hadith 2129

In this chapter, there is also a hadith narrated by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Narrated `Abdullah bin Zaid: The Prophet said, "The Prophet Abraham made Mecca a sanctuary, and asked for Allah's blessing in it. I made Medina a sanctuary as Abraham made Mecca a sanctuary and I asked for Allah's Blessing in its measures the Mudd and the Sa as Abraham did for Mecca.

Hadith Commentary:
It is understood from this that the practice of using the sa‘ (صاع) and mudd (مد) as measures for weighing and measuring existed even during the era of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplicated for blessing in them, and he supplicated for Madinah, and his supplication was accepted in the same way as Allah accepted the supplication of Ibrahim (alayhis salam) for Makkah al-Mukarramah. In fact, in some aspects of blessing, Madinah is distinguished with particular characteristics: there is abundant water present in the city, and the surrounding forests are lush and verdant.
Furthermore, nowadays, through the efforts of the Saudi government (may Allah preserve it), Madinah is becoming a developed city in every respect, which is all the fruit of the pure supplications of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
The Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had said: “Allahumma habbib ilayna al-madinata ka hubbina makkata aw ashad—O Allah! Instill in our hearts love for Madinah just as (or even more than) our love for Makkah al-Mukarramah.”

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The meaning of blessing in the Sa‘ and Mudd of Madinah Tayyibah is that whatever is measured in them will have blessing in it. Furthermore, the mention of the goodness and blessing of grain in the previous hadith is possible only when it is measured and weighed with the Sa‘ and Mudd of the people of Madinah, or with what corresponds to them.

(2)
The meaning of declaring Madinah Tayyibah as sacred (haram) is that trees and the like should not be cut there, so that the beauty of this holy city remains preserved and so that people’s love for it does not diminish.

And Allah knows best.

605 Lexical Explanation:
This is derived from "tahreem," meaning to make something sacred. And the meaning of the sanctity (tahreem) of Madinah Tayyibah is that hunting within it, cutting its trees, and committing innovations (bid‘ah) there are forbidden.

Benefit:
From this hadith, it is understood that just as Makkah Mukarramah is a sanctuary (haram), so too is Madinah Tayyibah. And the meaning of "Prophet Ibrahim (alayhis salam) declared Makkah a sanctuary" is that it was given sanctity due to his supplication, because in one narration it is stated: «اَنَّ مَكَّةَ حَرَّمَهَا ﷲ» meaning "Allah has made Makkah sacred."
