Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "The swearing (by the seller) may persuade the buyer to purchase the goods but that will be deprived of Allah's blessing."

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary: Although by swearing such false oaths for a few days, some wealth may indeed be gained, in the end, his lies and deceit are exposed, and the blessing (barakah) is thus removed because people, knowing him to be a liar, stop coming to his shop. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) spoke the truth.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Just as taking a false oath deprives a merchant of goodness and blessing, likewise, the blessing is removed from the wealth of one who engages in usurious (riba) transactions. Although apparently the amount increases by taking interest (riba), in reality, in terms of outcome, there is loss in both this world and the Hereafter. As narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Although wealth increases through usury (riba), its end result is scarcity." (Musnad Ahmad: 1/424) (2) There is no blessing in wealth acquired through usury (riba); it becomes a case of "Haram wealth goes to a haram place."

Moreover, in any society where usury (riba) becomes prevalent, the purchasing power of the poor class decreases, and due to the small number of the wealthy class, the circulation of wealth slows down significantly, which leads to economic crises. A class struggle begins between the rich and the poor. Sometimes, the poor, out of frustration, start robbing the rich. Tension between employer and laborer can give rise to many fatal consequences. In any case, the outcome of usury (riba) is extremely vile and dangerous.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
Manfiqah:
Derived from nifaq,
which means to promote,
to make something attractive for customers,
as if the verbal noun (masdar mimi) here is in the sense of the doer (fa'il).
(2)
Mamhqah:
Derived from mahq,
to erase,
to destroy.

Benefits and Issues:
It is not permissible to swear oaths unnecessarily in a transaction,
because a person who becomes accustomed to swearing oaths,
the awe and greatness of Allah Ta'ala departs from his heart,
and he begins to swear false oaths to deceive people,
by which the goods may be sold,
but the blessing is removed.

Benefits and Issues:
A Muslim trader should change the habit of taking unnecessary oaths.
And he should give charity so that it serves as expiation for this wrongful act.

Urdu marginal note:
Telling a false oath to sell goods is one thing, but even true oaths should not be taken, because when taking oaths becomes a habit, the distinction between truth and falsehood disappears. Moreover, in this way, the sanctity of Allah Ta'ala's name is lost. An oath should only be taken when there is no alternative. See the meaning of the removal of blessing in Hadith number: 4462.

Benefit:
Lying is a major sin; whatever it is uttered in, its blessing is removed. Regrettably, nowadays lying prevails in every matter, and this is the very reason that blessings have vanished today. May Allah grant us the ability to adhere firmly to truthfulness. Ameen.
