Explanation & Benefits

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In one narration, it is stated that Allah, the Exalted, will admit to Paradise the person who adopts cheerfulness when selling, buying, demanding rights, and fulfilling them.
(Sunan an-Nasa’i, al-Buyu‘, Hadith: 4700)
(2)
From this, it is understood that one should display a pleasant demeanor and open-heartedness in transactions, and also avoid narrow-mindedness and selfishness.
(3)
There is a possibility in the hadith of both a supplication and a statement of fact, but from a narration mentioned by Imam Tirmidhi rahimahullah, it is evident that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam informed about a specific person.
Its wording is as follows:
Allah, the Exalted, forgave a man from among those before you who used to show leniency at the time of buying and selling.
(Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, al-Ahkam, Hadith: 1320)
In any case, one should adopt good character in such dealings, because these matters bring blessing to wealth.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Allah Ta’ala loves gentleness because it establishes peace in society, whereas harshness gives rise to disputes that disrupt law and order.
➋ Most disputes among people occur in matters of transactions, when one person is not willing to tolerate the mistake of another, and each party considers only its own benefit. Therefore, patience and forbearance are especially needed in such matters.
➌ Gentleness in selling means giving a reasonable discount in price, granting respite to the one who buys on credit, and if the buyer asks for an unreasonable discount, then instead of arguing, politely excuse oneself. If the buyer wishes to return the purchased item, accept its return.
➍ Gentleness in buying means not demanding an unreasonable discount in price. If there is a minor defect in the item being purchased, overlook it as much as possible, and make payment in cash if possible. If the shopkeeper behaves inappropriately, do not respond with harsh words.
➎ “Demand” refers to claiming one’s right, for example: demanding repayment of a loan, or in the case of advance payment, demanding the purchased item at the appointed time.
➏ Gentleness in demanding means accepting the other’s valid excuse and granting appropriate respite, and while making the demand, being mindful of the other’s dignity and avoiding harsh words or abuse.
➐ Good character is a great virtue.
➑ The business of a trader with good character is blessed.
