Hadith 2050

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: `Ukaz, Majanna and Dhul-Majaz were marketplaces in the Pre-Islamic period of ignorance. When Islam came, Muslims felt that marketing there might be a sin. So, the Divine Inspiration came: "There is no harm for you to seek the bounty of your Lord (in the seasons of Hajj)." (2.198) Ibn `Abbas recited the Verse in this way.

Hadith Commentary:
In the recitation of Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu), the words "fi mawssim al-hajj" (in the season of Hajj) are additional after the noble verse: ﴿Laysa 'alaykum junahun an tabtaghu fadlan min rabbikum﴾ ().
However, in the common recitations, these additional words are not present, or perhaps they have been abrogated, and Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) was not informed of the abrogation.
The hadith mentions the marketplaces of the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah).
Islam, in its own era, promoted commercial marketplaces and encouraged them in every way.
However, for those involved in superstitions and deceit, there is no place worse than the marketplace.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has previously narrated this hadith in the Book of Hajj and established that trade can be conducted during the days of Hajj, and also proved the permissibility of buying and selling in the markets of the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah).
Since this hadith mentions the markets of the time of Jahiliyyah, and Islam, in its own era, greatly developed these commercial markets and encouraged them in every way, this indicates the importance and benefit of this profession.
Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu, contrary to the well-known recitation, used to recite the words (في مواسم الحج) "in the seasons of Hajj" at the end of this verse.
It is possible that these mentioned words were once part of the verse, which was later abrogated, but Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu was not informed of this.
This is called a rare (shaadh) recitation, which does not establish the recitation, but it can be used for deriving and deducing legal rulings.
