Explanation & Benefits

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The odd nights of the last ten (days) are: 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th.
According to the statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Laylat al-Qadr generally occurs among these nights, but its exact determination is not specified.
There is benefit for us even in its indeterminacy, so that we may worship Allah during these nights.
If we worship during these nights but do not sense or realize Laylat al-Qadr, even then we will not be deprived of its reward and its goodness and blessings.
(2)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has written that Laylat al-Qadr occurs only in Ramadan, and then it is most likely in the last ten (nights); after that, it should be sought in the odd nights of the last ten, but its determination cannot be made for any specific date.
This is what is understood from all the ahadith that have come in this regard.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In various hadiths, some signs regarding Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree) have also been mentioned, but these signs pertain to after the passing of Laylat al-Qadr, and even then, they are only possibilities, not conditions. For example:
One sign mentioned is the occurrence of rain, but there have been many Ramadans in which no rain occurred, even though the presence of Laylat al-Qadr in them is true and certain.
It also happens that a person stands in prayer during the odd nights of the last ten (nights) and attains Laylat al-Qadr, but he does not witness any supernatural event that night.
On this basis, our belief is that attaining Laylat al-Qadr does not require witnessing or experiencing something supernatural.
We do not hold the belief that only the person who witnesses a supernatural event can attain Laylat al-Qadr. Allah’s grace and mercy are vast; He is not in need of such things.
(2)
Aishah (radi Allahu anha) narrates that she said to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam):
“O Messenger of Allah! If I come to know that it is Laylat al-Qadr, what should I say?” He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied:
Recite this supplication:
(اللهم إنكَ عفو تحبُ العفوَ فاعفُ عَنِي)
“O Allah! You are Most Forgiving,
You love forgiveness, so forgive me.”

English Commentary:
1:
More than forty opinions of the scholars have been transmitted regarding the determination of Laylat al-Qadr.
Among these, the preferred opinion is that it is one of the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan, without specifying exactly which night.
Some narrations indicate that this night was made known to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but then it was caused to be forgotten.
The wisdom in this was that people would engage in more worship and remembrance of Allah in search of this night.
