Hadith 1963

'Narrated Abu Sa`id: That he had heard the Prophet saying, "Do not fast continuously (practice Al-Wisal), and if you intend to lengthen your fast, then carry it on only till the Suhur (before the following dawn)." The people said to him, "But you practice (Al-Wisal), O Allah's Apostle!" He replied, "I am not similar to you, for during my sleep I have One Who makes me eat and drink."

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
Ibn Abi Hatim has narrated with a sound chain from the wife of Bashir bin Khasasiyyah that she intended to observe a continuous fast for two days and nights, but her husband Bashir forbade her from this and related this hadith: that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade this and described it as the practice of the Christians, and said: "Observe the fast in the manner that Allah has commanded you for it. Fast until nightfall, and when night comes, break your fast immediately."

In the ahadith, the continuous fasting (sawm wisal) of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is mentioned; this is among his unique characteristics.

This reconciliation is given preference: "Allah feeds me and gives me drink"—by this, spiritual eating and drinking is meant.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) at first absolutely forbade continuous fasting (wisal), then he permitted continuous fasting until the morning. From this, the permissibility of fasting continuously until the morning is established. However, in Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to fast continuously until the morning, and when his noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) also wished to fast continuously until the morning, he forbade them from doing so. Someone said:
O Messenger of Allah! You yourself fast in this manner.
Upon this, he replied:
“Allah, the Exalted, gives me food and drink.”
(Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah: 281/3)

(2)
This hadith, on its face, appears to be in contradiction to the hadith of Abu Sa‘id (radi Allahu anhu) presented by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah), because according to the narration in Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, there is a prohibition of fasting continuously until the morning, whereas from Imam Bukhari’s narration, permissibility is understood.
The hadith of Abu Hurayrah (radi Allahu anhu) which is in Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah has been declared shaadh (anomalous) by the hadith scholars.

Benefits and Issues:
Undoubtedly, it is Allah Ta'ala alone Who feeds and gives drink to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
And that nourishment is certainly spiritual.
If any member of the Ummah wishes to observe wisal (continuous fasting without breaking), then he may do so only until sahur (pre-dawn meal).
