Hadith 1920

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d: I used to take my Suhur meals with my family and then hurry up for presenting myself for the (Fajr) prayer with Allah's Apostle.

Hadith Commentary:

That is, they used to eat suhoor (pre-dawn meal) at the very last moment, then would quickly join the congregation, because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would always perform the Fajr prayer after the break of dawn while it was still dark. It was not as it has become customary among our Hanafi brothers nowadays, who perform the Fajr prayer almost at sunrise. To always do so is contrary to the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). It is better to perform the Fajr prayer at its earliest time.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In the edition of Sahih Bukhari before us, the words are "adraka al-suhur," which we have translated as "the dawn prayer (Salat al-Fajr)" because this is explicitly stated in another narration.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Mawaqit, Hadith: 577)
In other editions of Bukhari, the words are "al-sujud," and this is the correct version.
(Fath al-Bari: 4/176)
(2)
The purpose of this chapter heading is that one should not delay in eating the pre-dawn meal (suhoor), because there is very little time between it and the dawn prayer (Salat al-Fajr). If one finishes late, there is a risk of missing the dawn prayer, so one should finish early and join the congregation.
Hazrat Sa'd (radi Allahu anhu) also used to hasten for this very reason, as Imam Malik narrates from Hazrat Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) that after completing the night prayer (Salat al-Layl), we would hasten to eat the pre-dawn meal (suhoor) lest we miss the dawn prayer.
(3)
Ibn Battal has written that Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) should have titled this hadith as "Delaying the Pre-dawn Meal (Suhoor)," and thus Allamah Ayni (rahimahullah), while explaining this hadith, has also discussed the delaying of the pre-dawn meal (suhoor).
However, in our view, the chapter heading established by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) is correct and more comprehensive.
And Allah knows best.
