Narrated Sahl bin Saud: When the following verses were revealed: 'Eat and drink until the white thread appears to you, distinct from the black thread' and of dawn was not revealed, some people who intended to fast, tied black and white threads to their legs and went on eating till they differentiated between the two. Allah then revealed the words, 'of dawn', and it became clear that meant night and day.

Hadith Commentary:
In the beginning, some of the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) did not understand the meaning of the appearance of dawn (fajr), so they began to determine fajr by means of a white and a black thread. However, when the words "min al-fajr" were revealed, they came to know the reality.
By the black thread is meant the darkness of the night, and by the white thread is meant the brightness of the morning.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
It is understood from this hadith that the revelation of this verse had already occurred before the incident of Adi bin Hatim radi Allahu anhu, but he was not aware of its details. He had only heard the verse and acted upon it according to his own understanding, because in another hadith this is clarified: when he narrated his experience to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“O Ibn Hatim! Did I not recite to you the words ‘min al-fajr’?” Adi radi Allahu anhu replied:
“O Messenger of Allah! I had forgotten this detail, so what happened, happened.”

Imam Nawawi rahimahullah said:
The act of tying a white and a black thread to the feet was done by those who were not present in the gatherings of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and were unfamiliar with the Qur’anic style.
It is possible that in their dialect, the use of black and white thread was not commonly known as a reference to night and day.
